2.25 hours travel (one way) is a long way to go also for a set of shops.

Not really a shopaholic but Tokyo has far more interesting shops than Gotemba. A bit overrated and not exactly bargain basement prices. Been there twice (first time out of curiosity and the second grudgingly agreed to accompany some friends).
That said, I thought Karuizawa was a more pleasant day trip from Tokyo. Not so much for their factory outlets but for the lovely town.
