From Hakuba to Kawaguchiko

Hi
I am driving from Hakuba to Kawaguchiko in mid December and would like to find out if there are any interesting places to stopover and see in between?
Would Matsumoto castle be suitable?
Travelling with an 8 year old and 4 year old.

My at the time, 7 year old really enjoyed Matsumoto Castle. She even enjoyed the Matsumoto Municipal Art Museum, and since kids are free and you're only paying for yourself, not the children, so if they lose interest it's OK. Mine really liked all the optical illusions.
