Northern Kyushu (Onsen/Sento/Ramen) 2018/11/14 15:50
Good day. I will be travelling to Northern Kyushu from 20th dec 2018 to 6th Jan 2019.

I will explore mainly Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Beppu areas.

My main focus is to enjoy the Onsens/Sento and Ramens.

I wish to know what are your recommendations for those categories. Especially shops which are less well known but still great to visit.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to this post. Cheers.

Onsen: Kurokawa Onsen and specifically the Yamamizuki onsen for its great rotenburos. But also the village itself and visiting other onsen there.

I havenft been to Beppu onsen or other places. But Kurokawa Onsen is definitely a highlight in Japan.

Enjoy your trip to Kyushu!

Maybe try and see if the onsens in Minami Aso are open again?https://kumanago.jp/sp/en/spots/detail/430000003811

The mud baths at seifuso ryokan are fantastic, as is the food (amazing food), and itfs a lot quieter than Kurokawa.

The water source was disturbed by the earthquake a couple of years back, but perhaps itfs back in business now?

Fukuoka has 2 main areas for its famous tonkotsu (pork broth) ramen - the more picturesque place is in Nakasu by the Naka River and neon lights. Lots of ramen stalls (yatai). Another is by the waterfront at Nagahama - more locals eat there. One other place worth considering is on the top floor of Canal City on the south end, there is Ramen Stadium, a collection of ramen restaurants serving many different styles.
There are many good areas for hot springs - if you have the time, Unzen in Nagasaki and Takeo in Saga are a few other possibilities.
For Fukuoka, be sure not to miss the Nanzoin Temple about 20 minutes by train from Hakata Stn - one of Japan's finest yet still nearly unknown to even the well traveled.

Another gem in the region is the Yutoku Inari Shrine in Saga - absolutely magnificent and mostly ignored by the swelling tourist hordes.

BTW if you want to see some places lit up for the holidays, there is

and one place that really makes a show is Huis Ten Bosch in Nagasaki. It looks like you walked into Holland and even some Dutch are surprised by the place.

Hope you have a great trip.
