I have read from tripadvisor that JR Kyushu has discounted their group discount tickets.

Is that true? Does that apply for for both groups of 2 and groups of 4 discount tickets?

4 mai kippu were discontinued.
2 mai kippu is still available.

the media release only makes mention of the 4 mai kippu. cannot help on the 2 mai

...

If you are traveling to both locations and as a visitor, the the 3 or 5 day Northern Kyushu JR pass would still be better value. 8500 to 10,000 yen.
