For many places - between three and six months in advance - that is typical for Japan. For international chains and booking sites maybe 11/12 months in advance.

Probably the time to avoid travelling into Japan to avoid outrageous prices and the worst service possible in Japan, I intend to watch the olympics on TV :-)
