Autumn Trip 2018/12/30 01:05
Hi all,
i'm planning for a next year Autumn Trip, which consist of Osaka (3 days) -> Kyoto (4 days) -> Kurobe Alpine Route (staying in Matsumoto) (2 days) -> Tokyo (4 days)
Got some questions.

1. How to get to Matsumoto from Tokyo?
2. Should I get a JR pass (since I will use shinkansen around)? If yes, what JR pass and for when?
3. If I want to add Kawaguchi Lake into the schedule, is it feasible and when?
4. Will 6 hours be enough for Alpine Route if i want to use Ogizawa In and Out track?

Thanks for all the response :)

1. How to get to Matsumoto from Tokyo?

The options are explained here:
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6053.html

2. Should I get a JR pass (since I will use shinkansen around)? If yes, what JR pass and for when?

I can't think of any pass that will pay off for your itinerary. Regular tickets will come cheaper.

3. If I want to add Kawaguchi Lake into the schedule, is it feasible and when?

Yes, it is relatively easily added, as it is located pretty much along the route from Matsumoto to Tokyo.

4. Will 6 hours be enough for Alpine Route if i want to use Ogizawa In and Out track?

It is a mystery to me why you would want to travel in and out of Ogizawa. If you come from Kyoto, starting from Toyama and ending at Ogizawa will be easier, faster and cheaper.

As for the time needed, please take a look at the timetables:
https://www.alpen-route.com/en/timetable/

If you travel on busy days, assume that there may be waiting times at some stops along the route. The linked timetables are for 2018, but can be expected to be very similar in 2019.

Hi, I just thought to add that Autumn at Matsumoto and Lake Kawaguchiko areas is probably 2 - 3 weeks earlier at least than in Tokyo and Osaka. We went through those areas from 24 October to about 7 November this year, starting in Tokyo and ending in Nara. Generally speaking Lake Kawaguchiko had colour at 25 October, there was a lot of colour between there and Matsumoto (especially as you get higher), Takayama was at peak around the first week of November whereas Nara was just starting when we got there afterward.

1. I'm so sorry, what i mean is getting to Matsumoto from Kyoto.

2. Even when i'm using Shinkansesn and JR from Kyoto -> Matsumoto -> Tokyo?

3. Before or After Alpine Rout for your suggestion?

4. It is a mystery to me why you would want to travel in and out of Ogizawa. If you come from Kyoto, starting from Toyama and ending at Ogizawa will be easier, faster and cheaper.

Well, i don't want to add more cost to send luggage from Toyama to Ogizawa, so i think it's better to stay in Matsumoto and travel in and out Alpine Route from there

2. Even when i'm using Shinkansesn and JR from Kyoto -> Matsumoto -> Tokyo?

Certainly. You can make the calculation here:

3. Before or After Alpine Rout for your suggestion?

Afterwards.
