JR pass for subway? 2019/1/3 11:19
Im completely confused about the JR Pass. I know it covers the trains when travelling between most of the long distance cities. but how about local travels? like taking trains/subways throughout tokyo locally, from kyoto to nara, kobe to osaka. things like that? does it cover the japan city buses? any insight?

but how about local travels?

Local trains are covered if they are operated by JR (Japan Railways). Most major cities in Japan are served by a mix of JR lines and non-JR lines. Subways are not operated by JR and cannot be used. Most buses are not covered. Read the following pass for more details:

In general, the JR pass is useful for getting between cities, but not for broad travel inside the cities. The good news is that mass transit inside Japanese cities is very affordable, and the larger cities will have a day pass available.

If you have JR pass, then it can be very useful for getting around Tokyo, but I wouldn't use it exclusively. it has some use in Kyoto and Osaka as well, but just as a supplement to the other train companies.

The point to realize is that in Japan there are many train companies. Among them JR. The JR pass is valid on JR trains only (yes, there are with a few of the JR passes some minor exceptions in the small print you can read up on).
Subways are not JR, city busses are not JR.

There are even some long distance trains that are not JR.

And an other important exception: you cannot take Nozomi Shinkansen. These are the fastest and more frequent ones from Tokyo to the South.

A PP posted the link to the detailed description. Thatfs a good starting point to learn more about the pass.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!
