Railpass or individual train tickets? 2019/1/15 20:37
Hello,

Last year we also went 1 month to Japan and bought a JRP for 7 days to visit Matsumoto, Takayama and Kanazawa departing from Tokyo. We also visited Osaka but we like Kyoto more...

This year we planning a trip for 1 month visiting Japan and South Korea. We don't known is it worth to buy a JRP or not?
itinerary:
14/5 Tokyo ( daytrips )
Tokyo 10 days
24/5 Tokyo-Kyoto (daytrips to Nara, Kobe)
Kyoto 6 days
30/5 Kyoto-Hiroshima
Hiroshima 2 days
1/6 Hiroshima-Fukuoka
Fukuoka 3days

The 4th of June we go to Busan...we are not sure yet if we fly or take the ferry...,
JRP is only for 7 or 14 or 21 consecutive days...
We both are over 65 years so we travel very relax and enjoy day by day not an overloaded program.
What kind of pass is suitable? Or just buy individual traintickect?
Btw. we still need a hotel in Fukuoka ... a nice 3* hotel we a good location ...any suggestions?

Hoping to hear from you...

Kind regards,
Mrs. G.Q.

National rail passes wont pay off.

Just use local or regionals passes for each location if they suit.

National rail passes wont pay off.

Your long distance travel would be Tokyo to Kyoto, Kyoto to Hiroshima and then Hiroshima to Hakata (Fukuoka) which will cost around 31000 yen by individual tickets. So it is correct the pass will not pay off, since you must buy 14 day pass to include all the long distance trips and the 14 day pass is 46390 yen.

But if you buy the pass, you will have 11 days to do day trips for free, for example:

Tokyo to Karuizawa 65 min by Hokuriku Shinkansen, 11420 yen round trip.
Tokyo to Sendai 95 min by Tohoku Shinkansen, 22000 yen round trip.
Kyoto to Himeji 56 min by Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen, 10140 yen round trip.
Hakata to Kagoshima-chuo 95 min by Kyushu Shinkansen, 20500 yen round trip.

What daytrips from Tokyo did you have planned? If any involve the Shinkansen, then you may get value out of a 14 day pass as mentioned above. If you are just going to Hakone or Nikko, then specific passes for those places make more sense. Or for shorter distance daytrips, paying 1000y each way for the train out of pocket makes more sense than an expensive pass.

If you don't get the 14 day pass, then a 7 day Sanyo San'in Pass might make sense. It's the same price as just paying for Kyoto to Hiroshima and Hiroshima to Hakata (Fukuoka), but it's good for 7 days. SO you could activate it a few days before leaving Kyoto and use it for daytrips from Kyoto (Kobe, etc). It would only have to be valid through the day you arrive in Fukuoka as it will be no use traveling around Fukuoka, just for getting there.

Also, If you can spare an extra hour, the Platt-Kodama fares can save a few thousand yen on fare between Tokyo and Kyoto. http://www.jrtours.co.jp/kodama/en/
