Best day hikes in Hakuba late October

Hi,
We are staying in Hakuba for 2,5 days in late October.
We initially planned to hike Mt. Shirouma-dake and stay overnight at Hakuba Sanso Lodge. Unfortunately we learned that all the mountain (summit) lodges are already closed.
What would be good alternatives? We already know that we could hike to Happo pond and if possible to Mt. Karamatsu in one day. Are there any other great options?
