Visa related question 2019/8/23 04:43
Hello everyone,

I've been working and living in Japan for 4 years on a Specialist in Humanities visa which is still valid until December next year. In a few weeks from now though, I will be getting married to a Japanese national. My question is, am I obliged to change my visa status to Spouse visa or do I simply continue on the visa I have now?

Thanks in advance!

Immigration can't force you to change your status.
It is up to you to decide to change or not, weighing the pro and cons.

Some of the pro having spouse status:
Your Specialist status limits your jobs types, whereas having a spouse status enable you to work any types of jobs. More jobs opportunity if you want to change.
Also, having spouse status will fast track your Permanent Residency, should you want to apply.
3-5 years, as oppose to normal work status/visa (10 years).

As mentioned you are not forced.
You just need to register your marriage at the local city hall.

Anyway having a spouse gives you additional freedom. Easier to change jobs, does not have to be related with the visa etc.
