Shinkansen Tokyo to Kyoto Jan 7 2020

I will be arriving in Tokyo Jan 7 2020 at 9 00 am and would like to travel to Kyoto via the Shinkansen.
This will be my 5th trip to Japan and I chose this date deliberately to avoid the travel peak over the New Year holiday. However, I have just been reading that in 2020 school/work wonft resume until Jan 8.
I will have a JR pass - will it be likely that I can book 3 seats for the Shinkansen on arrival or should I consider looking at flights?

I would have thought your timing would be fine to get a train Tokyo->Kyoto that day. There are also non-reserved cars and if you wanted a reserved seat, you might need to change your preferred travel time or sit separately.
