Ifm traveling with a big family of 14-16 people from Tokyo to Kyoto and will return on the same day. Is it possible to get non reserved seats when I get to Tokyo or do I need to book the Shinkansen ride ahead of time?

Keep in mind that during new year reservations are almost impossible due the holiday season. It is advice by JR to book one month in advance if you want to travel in the holiday season. You can always travel non reserved but do not expect available seats

January 2 and 3 (especially January 2) aren't going to be extremely busy yet, because the holidays last until January 5 this year. Still, with such a large group I recommend to make advance reservations. The smartEX app allows you to do so (but not if you use a Japan Rail Pass). Reservations are possible from one month before the travel date: https://smart-ex.jp/en/

14-16 people from Tokyo to Kyoto and will return on the same day That is a big group and a same day trip implies you are wanting an early departure and a late return. You should reserve ahead of time (or get tickets booked for you.) I use SmartEx on the web and it is advertised fairly heavily locally. Some days across the NY period stopped taking pre-orders, so some days are guaranteed to be busy as in previous years. The Thursday will possibly be quieter than the Friday. I don't use the smartex "app".
