Transfer between trains in 8mins 2019/11/28 21:18
I'll be arriving Kanazawa via limited express thunderbird at 0913 on track 7. I need to transfer to Toyama via shinkansen at 0921 at track 14. Is it possible to do so within 8mins with a big lugguage in tow?

Thanks
Lee

It should be okay. Familiarize yourself with the station layout on the JR website and note which car you are in in comparison to escalators.

From platform to Shinkansen you need to go down by escalator or elevator located on platform 7.
I do not know if you have your shinkansen tickets or if you use JR pass.
If you need to collect the tickets it can be busy depending on the day.
If you us JR pass you need to show the pass to the JR station staff.
If you have already have the tickets and it is not busy you could make it.

Below a link of the station layout so you could plan.

8 min is a lot. 3-5 min is when you should worry

You will probably be just fine, but itfs cutting things a little close. If Toyama is your ultimate destination, then it isnft the end of the world if you miss your 9:21 train, but if you are absolutely counting on that to make a connection at Toyama then things could get hairy if your Thunderbird is late. There is this grand myth that the trains in Japan always run on time, but the reality is that they sometimes donft! When they are late, itfs usually only by a few minutes, and sometimes they will hold connecting trains so people donft miss their connections, but you canft count on any of that.

Bottom line is, I wouldnft stress out over it (under normal conditions 8 minutes is plenty), but definitely review the Kanazawa station diagram so you can get to the shinkansen platform as quickly as possible, and consider having a backup plan. If it were me I might possibly consider taking an earlier Thunderbird. Or see if the next-departing shinkansen will get you to Toyama in time. If you miss a train you have tickets for, you can use non-reserved seating on the next train.

This video is a transfer fr the Shinkansen platform No.14 to a conventional line No.5.
It is not up to No.7, but total time and route are the mostly same.

On the way from the area of conventional line to the Shinkansen platform,
you will pass a "transfer" ticket gate.

See also below, you can understand it perfectly, bc too much info on the map of the stn,

This is Kanazawa stn Live Cam(no sound) at and numbered screenshot.

In the map image, both the conventional line and the Shinkansen platforms may look same height floor,
but conventional line is clearly lower, 7 to 14 distance can be easily imagined from car size on rooftop parking.

If you get on front side cars of Thunderbird, the elevator is nearby,
but because it goes down to the floor below the escalator and stairs, it will be detour.

Thunderbird 1 has 6+3 = 9 cars total,

the front, Car No.1 is Green, 5,6,7 are non-reserved, left cars 2,3,4,8,9 are ordinary reserved,

Car no.3 has special seats these for woman(not separated) if need.
