Hyperdia through symbol 2020/1/6 20:48
Hello Japan Guide, I am planning to take the train from Otsuki to Tokyo, but I am confused about the Hyperdia "Through" symbol.

There are two symbols: "Transfer" and "Through" at different timetables, but what I am struggling with is that I have to make a "Transfer" at Takao station if I abroad at 5:02 AM, while I don't have to if I abroad at 6:26 AM. The screenshots are below:

Correct.
Note in the top line after it says "take time" it says how many transfers as well.

The first one requires you to get off the train and take another. In the second one, you stay on the train.

Google Maps is much easier (and less confusing) to use, and more accurate as well.

In my experience, that is not the case. I have seen Google maps suggesting quite odd routes to confused/lost tourists in Tokyo suggesting multiple trains when a simple direct (no transfer) option was available.
Both Google and Hyperdia have their quirks.
