Geisha & Samurai pictures 2020/1/27 04:58
Does anyone know where my wife could get dressed up as a Geisha and I could get dressed up as a Samurai warrior other than at a studio? We are looking in Tokyo and Kyoto and so far haven't seen anywhere that will do that and take pictures for memorabilia sake.

Hi!

When you say studio do you mean studio like a back drop or like Toei Uzumasa Eigamura Studios in Kyoto?

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3934.html

If you don't mean the latter, they offer it and I believe you can walk around the park in costume. It's not "authentic" but should certainly give you the photos you want.

There are many many many places that offer kimono experiences in Kyoto. Men usually rent a male style kimono (or some sort of hakama) vs. actually dressing like a samurai. Do you just want to dress in a hakama too or are you looking for something more?

This is just one example of what is on offer:

I actually rented from Okamoto in June 2017. They had a large selection of kimono that fit heavier western women (like me) and I liked that they had more modern designs that looked like a person would actually wear vs. looking like I was wearing a costume. They spent a lot of time dressing me, and I don't think I have ever walked so straight in my entire life. I would probably skip the geta next time or so something for my feet so they don't blister as much. They offer several varieties of kimono and hakama for men.

Good luck!

Well it looks like we are going to have to do Toei Uzumasa Eigamura to get a Geisha outfit for my wife and a Samurai or Ninja for myself though I probably am better suited size wise as a Samurai. Sounds like a fun place. What part of Kyoto is it in so we can work it into an itinerary?

There are places near Gion that do it as well. My daughter dressed up several years ago in one and would have been OK to wander about but she was too shy. They had samurai gear as well which I have to say was mighty tempting. It might have been one of these places https://www.travel-kyoto-maiko.com/traveltips/the-four-best-maiko-make...

I used this one a few years ago (as a birthday treat to myself) and recommended them to my friend when we went a couple of years ago.

The service was good both times, though I recommend booking an early slot as it does get busy. More than happy with the way the photos turned out and the photographer was very nice and instructive. They had an offer on for foreigners when I went so I don't know if that's still going on.

Do all the recommended places do both Samurai for Men and Geisha for women? I see several that do Geisha but not the Samurai part and I really would like to wear some of the warrior outfit and not Ninja style clothes IF I can find it in Kyoto or Tokyo.
