Good onsen for family with elder person 2021/2/25 17:44
Hi guys,
Im a Vietnamese working in Osaka city. As Japan will be reopen for foreigners in this March, I would like to take my parents to Japan for a short vacation.
Do you guys know any hotels with onsen that is reasonable price and good for elder people ? My father is very old and weak so I hope he can enjoy hotspring experience safely..

I know is this a bit belated, but I feel it's important. Also because your time to invite your parents over, probably hasn't come round yet.

Most luxury onsen have a standing shower, if you feel that works best. Many are able to provide a chair for eldery people to sit on at the sitting-down showers. It is not weird to, if you go in with along your dad, to be helping him to shower; to wash his back and help him to make sure to properly rinse.

When walking about from bath to bath, you might want to keep hold of him, because I feel the worst thing that could possibly happen is when he falls. The floors are hard, he won't be wearing clothes to soften the fall, and there are oftenly nasty corners. Take your time to get into the bath, keep holding him until it's safe to let go. Other bathers will mostly likely respect you for your guidance with your father. I'm certain they'll be patient when getting in or out will take some time. I know I would be, and I'm not even Japanese ;)

So, which exact onsen you pick out isn't all that important. Maybe just look around at their websites to see if they seem safe, if they have railings to hold on to, if they have chairs for the elderly, etc. Just don't cheap out.

Another option is to rent a family bath if you're absolutely not certain if a public bath will work out well. That way other bathers will not be in your way, but then again, the public is probably what it's all about :)

My Japanese friend's said that her old mother got tired, was not able to relax at one onsen, because the bathroom was dark (due to design) and she was so careful all the time not to slip and get injured even though she was accompanied by my friend. So I think Iightning could be one of elements of good onsen?

If you plan to stay over night, I also suggest you to check immigration site, so that you don't waste time and money for booking a room on the day your family can't be in Japan.

If you are based in Osaka, then the cheapest option to enjoy "poor man" onsen experience is to spend one or several nights in those business hotels, which have onsen baths. At least APA chain has several of them, probably others too (Mitsui, Daiwa, Dormy Inn etc).
If staying overnight at onsen resort due the monetary situation is not a priority, the onsens in Arima Onsen and Kinosaki Onsen are also very easy to reach with public transport from Osaka.
However, all the floors in most of the onsens are slippery and bath areas feature a lot of sharp corners so be as a close as possible to support him when he is walking between the baths.

could you be a little bit more specific with the kind of onsen you wish?
* most important: in which area it should be. close to osaka or doesnt matter?
* is it just about the onsen (and sleep somewhere else) or do you search for a good ryokan kombination
* ist most important criteria stunning looks of the onsen or shall it be more focused on special healing power of water (which might be also interesting for elderly people)

but in general the suggestion from mfedley is great. not only you can go to some stunning onsen there, it is also relatively cheap (you could even take it without food and just cook for yourself there), it has wonderful environment and you can also relax on hot ground.

If you want where not so many people go, but is easily accessible from Osaka, and also have views to the sea, you could go to Shirahama Onsen:
