First of All, you will be very happy to know that 22 july 2021 known as marines Day ,you can board for free on 67 routes across japan offered by japan passenger ship assosiation
Yanai is in yamaguchi prefecture and
Matsuyama is in ehime prefecture with 13 ferry crossings each way and takes 5 hour for 62 km journey.Boyo ferry is your best choice
Beside nakajima kisen,setonaikaikisen ferry also run.130 ferry crisscross seto inland sea.

Beside Ferry, you can go by bus ,rental car
or Train.

My japanese friend said:
Only elementary school students and under age children can board for free on 67 routes across japan.Adult will pay full fare.
