Plan for the Izu Peninsula 2023/1/2 07:22
We have finally started to make plans for our April '23 trip to Japan more definite and would love some comments about the few days we'll be on the Izu Peninsula.
We're not great hikers but leisurely walks around beautiful places are always a joy. Mostly we enjoy small towns, interesting markets, good food and the general beauty of Japan, having visited about 8 times now.
We'll take the train from Nagoya to Atami on 7th April and stay one night there... visit the castle and other sights??
Next morning we'll pick up a car and drive slowly to Shimoda where we will also stay one night. We'd love advice about places to stop along the way - to sightsee or eat.
Next day we'll head up the other coast and stay that night in a hostel in Namazu... chosen mainly because it is an easy driving distance to Atami where we will return the car next day, and take the train up to Narita to meet our daughter and grand-daughter arriving on the evening of 11th April.
We'd love any advice about how to make the most of what looks like a beautiful area!
Thanking you in advance!

As far as where I went, on the east coast, I recommend the Jogasaki coast Suspension Bridge and Mount Omuro Lift.

I also enjoyed the MOA Museum of Art in Atami.

On the west coast, I stopped by the Chohachi Museum.

A morning market is held in Inatori on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. (8:00-12:00)

Inatori is known for Kinmedai.
The last time I went to Inatori, I ate at a restaurant called Tokuzou-maru.
It seems that there is also a store in Atami.

Even Ito seems to have a morning market on Saturdays and Sundays. (7:30-10:30)

There is a possibility of cancellation if the weather is bad.

oops, hit tab and posted by mistake.

1. We didnt stay in Atami itself because we found out at the last minute that our room had no windows (lol). So we stayed at a ryokan at the next station Ajiro, called Taiseikan. It was really cheap, and fantastic - big rooms, great food, nice views over the water . Ajiro itself had pretty much nothing going on, but it is a short walk to the station and Atami one way, Ito the other, fantastic place for a base. I'd stay again. Going through Atami, it wasnt really my cup of tea anyway, pretty tired looking.
2. Ito is very nice, and the zoo is fantastic, it is similar to the Nagasaki Biopark complete with Capybaras. It has brilliant views over the ocean, and to Mount Omuro which is really interesting to look at (didnt brave the chairlift).
3. Shuzenji is very nice, especially for an overnight stay. The train ride there is pretty, too.

I also enjoyed Shuzenji and remember that there was a Wasabi farm between Shuzenji and Shimoda along the road.

And I echo that Shuzenji is nice.

The Izu Peninsula used to be one of my favourite places to visit when I used to live in Japan.

On staying at Atami - it might be the gateway to Izu but it might not be the best place. I see it as being a bit over developed. I quite liked the Atami Museum of Art (already mentioned) plus I also liked the apricot garden and Kiunkaku Former Ryokan. On the castle - avoid it like the plague! It's a concrete monstrosity which is not original and has little going for it apart from good views. If you want a good local castle - visit Odawara close by.....

My original visit to Atami: https://www.japan-guide.com/community/mfedley/report-1140

A nice slightly quieter town close to Atami is Ito. I used to stay at K's House Ito onsen which is a cheap place which used to be a fancy ryokan. Parking might be a problem though... https://kshouse.jp/ito-e/index.html

Mt Omuro is really fun and I like the walk along the Jogasaki Coat which is around an hour of so. It's very volcanic. Komuroyama Park might also be worth a visit if you are there in late April

My visits to Ito: https://www.japan-guide.com/community/mfedley/report-1388

Shimoda is known for the location where Admiral Perry made/forced his way into Japan and is also home to one of the nicest beaches close to Tokyo. It's home to some small temples and I quite like the ropeway which has nice views. There are also some nice walks along the ocean further south.

Shimoda Trip Guide: https://www.japan-guide.com/community/mfedley/report-948

A nice traditional onsen town is also Shuzenji - just note that it's not very "English Language Friendly" compared to other locations. I've not really explored the west coast much so can't comment on that.

Something to strongly consider is the size of the peninsula and the time needed to get to different places. I originally thought you only had 2 nights and thought that this would be a stretch as the roads are windy and slow. But 3 nights should be enough time. Numazu has an imperial villa that looks interesting - but I've not been.

If I boiled things down to the best, I'd also say Jogasaki, Omuro and Shimoda. Especially the last one if you are interested in history and Perry pushing his way into Japan. Actually June during hydrangea season would be a great time, but you are going in April. Cape Irozaki is another popular place, plus there is the Nandaru walk for the various waterfalls if you want. But while driving is a lot more convenient and will save some time, the further you go, the more time consuming all this gets. You really could spend several days exploring Izu - the west coast has some good sights as well.

I don't know why - but I thought they were visiting in late April. This location has great Azaleas in April/May and I was a bit late one year (early May): https://jw-webmagazine.com/komuroyama-park-azalea-festival-147586ea9f7...

RE - Poster (not Ken): Izu is mainly known for it's Kawazu-Sakura Cherry blossoms which flower much earlier than other varieties. I'm guessing you've already been to Japan during Sakura season.....
