gWhyh is a difficult one to answer - each language has its rules for expressing ideas and situations.
The following is copied from an old post to which Ifd made my contribution.

The particle gnih has many different usages, thus is used in different patterns with different verbs.

(1) (Place/location) gnih: destination or direction
- Watashi wa mainichi gakkou ni Ikimasu. (I go TO school every day.)
- Sono kado so migi ni magatte kudasai. (Please turn TO the right at that corner.)

(2) (Action) gnih: purpose
- Depaato ni kaimono ni ikimasu. (I go to the department store FOR shopping.)

(3) (Person) gnih: meeting/seeing people
- Kinou, mukashi no tomodachi ni aimashita. (Yesterday I saw/bumped into an old friend.)

(4) (Person) gnih: indirect object
- Gakkou de sensei ni shitsumon so shimashita. (At school I asked a question TO the teacher.)
- Ashita ryokou no shashin wo tomodachi ni mishmash. (Tomorrow I will show my travel photos TO my friend.)
cto name a few typical ones.
