Stamps at Stations 2023/4/4 19:18
Hi :) I've seen in a new youtube video that Harajuku station have a stamp which you can stamp into a journal. Do all the stations have stamps? For example, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Odawara, Hakone-Yumoto?

Thinking about taking a journal to collect the stamps at all the stations we use.

Most stations have stamps, but not all. I could not find the exact number, but found that of 144 subway stations in Tokyo 6 do not have station stamps. The condition of the stamps and ink pads, as well as the location of stamps, varies a lot.

JR East is holding a stamp rally event for a limited time.

There is also a stamp rally that uses a smartphone (a type that reads a QR code and uses it)

Harajuku station stamps may have ended.

Many museums, aquariums and tourist parks have them also.

Sometimes they're not easily found as most stations have multiple exits. If you can't find it, and they're usually close to the manned booths, don't hesitate to ask for "eki stampu". And yes, some stamps are in pristine shape and some are so used and the ink pad so dry, it's hard to make out the design.

Thank you to everyone who responded and your help! :)

I'll make sure to be on the lookout at the stations, museums and aquariums. I've made a note to check near manned booths and ask for 'eki stampu'. It disappointing that some might not be able to make out the design but i'll still make sure to check.

I'm taking a journal which i would love to fill with stamps and instant photos from my camera. This was really helpful. Does anyone have any other recommendations of anything else which would be great to collect?

I already collect pressed coins but know these aren't that popular anymore. Pokemon Centre have a new one though which i'm hoping to get!

Hi John B digs Japan,

Thank you so much! That looks amazing and it's such a great idea, i'll definitely be doing this. I'm not 100% sure how many shrine and temples we are going to but i'll definitely keep an eye out for this at the ones i do visit.

I know we want to visit Meiji Shrine, Sensoji Temple and i want to try and visit Hakone Shrine. I've actually just looked up more shrines and temples in Tokyo and there is a lot more beautiful ones then what i thought. The list will be growing! Do you recommend any Shrines and Temples in particular?

Is it easily sign posted towards where you can get this done at shrines and temples?

Also, i know the website said that you have to get a special book but would they do it in my leather journal? I'm just not sure i want to do a few different books instead of one.

Abhi B,

Yes, train stations of all kinds in Japan usually have its unique stamp available for the public to stamp at any time during station operation hours. They are usually located near the ticket gate, but if you don't see them, ask the station staff for "stamp".

Quite often, railway companies would also throw events where passengers could buy a pass to travel around certain areas collecting stamps. A stamp note would typically come with the event.

Note that many touristic spots have stamps too.

Just note that for goshuin you need a proper book for collecting the stamps, not just any old notebook or journal.
For things like station stamps, I often see people collecting them when there are things like stamp rallies, but outside of those times, finding the stamps would be a bit trickier. (And, yes, many tourist attractions have stamps - sometimes several.)

Size and shape vary a lot. From my own collection, the biggest is about 80mm (3.125") round, smallest is about 40mm square (1.5").
