Storing records while travelling 2023/4/25 13:43
Hi. We are visiting Japan for 5 weeks later this year. We will spend a week in Tokyo when we arrive, then travel for 4 weeks before returning to Tokyo for one day and flying home. We will be staying at separate places for each visit.
We intend to do lots of record shopping in our first week but flying them home is really expensive and they will be bulky to travel with. Does anyone have any suggestions for what we could do? Can we rent out a locker to keep them in while we travel?
Thanks for any suggestions

You could always surface mail them home

Switch your itinerary around so you have the week in Tokyo last. Then you are only carrying them around for a few days.

Lockers no good as only usable for up to 3 days.

Thanks, I was wondering if the lockers had a time limit.

Long time lockers are available in some places:

Don't hotels keep luggage for you any more?

@Uco - yes, but the OP is not returning to the same hotel.
There are some long-term storage facilities, but if you're getting slugged with (say) 600 yen per day for several weeks that is going to add up pretty quickly. Even using delayed delivery (a week at a time) is going to be a reasonable slice of change.
Why you cannot buy the records at the end of the trip when you are back in Tokyo isn't explained.

Yes, it would be easier to buy them at the end but wefll be visiting all different parts of the city during our first week and will drop in at shops as we see them. Ifll compare the cost of long term lockers with postage. None of the options seem cheap. Thanks for all your suggestions.

You could consider rearranging your trip and spending the last week in Tokyo instead of the first.

Okay, thank you, JapanCustomTours.

And I can fully understand that the OP wants to shop on the first week. It's more of a mystery to me that (s)he can't stay at the same hotel when coming back to Tokyo.

I can solve the mystery! We are staying at an apartment the first week and then a robot hotel on our return. We wanted to experience as much of Tokyo as possible and stay in a different area on our return. Thanks

Okay, thanks.

Have you thought about negotiating to the record shops to see if they can keep your records after you've paid for them?
