We will be travelling from Tokyo to Hakodate in July. Wanting to stop off on the way at either Amori or Hachinohe. I am leaning more towards Hachinohe as it is slightly cooler there in July. Which would you recommend?

What do you plan to do? Also when you plan on arriving could affect things. It takes 3-4 hours to reach Hachinohe, so if you don't take an early train, your options will be limited. Neither has much around the stations themselves, but Aomori has more than Hachinohe if you want something near the station. If you're willing to take buses, from Hachinohe you can access the Lake Towada area. Hachinohe itself has Kabushima, Ne Castle, and the Korekawa Museum: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/HachinoheAomori City is covered on Japan-guide: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3750.htmlHirosaki City, the main tourist town in Aomori, is more easily accessible from Aomori: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3701.html

I like my visits to Aomori, I find it an interesting city and has quite a few things to see/do. Have not visited Hachinohe so can not comment on the comparison.
