Travel between Kiso Fukushima and Tsumago 2023/5/30 23:46
Hello, We have been recommended to stay in a ryokan in Kiso Fukushima as a place to stay to enable us to do the Nakasendo trail between Tsumago and Magome. Is it realistic to be able to use public transport from Kiso Fukushima to Tsumago, walk the trail to Magome and then use public transport to return to Kiso Fukushima?

Yes, that is no problem. See a map here:
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6079.html

It is only a 30-60 minute train ride between Kiso-Fukushima and Nagiso, which is the closest station to Tsumago, and a 40-80 minute train ride between Kiso-Fukushima and Nakatsugawa, which is the closest station to Magome. You have the choice between faster and more expensive limited express trains vs. slower, cheaper local trains. Both trains are covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Hi, we just did that several weeks back.

Stayed at Kiso Fukushima at Iwaya one night (lovely) and then 2 at Kaido-Roman Onyado something (2 nights, fantastic), then took the train to Narai on day for the walk back to yabuhara (unfortunately couldnt do it as it was too icy, but Narai was nice), then the next train to Nakatsugawa, bus to Magome, walk to Tsumago. It was getting late at Tsumago by the time we got there so we ended up taxi-ing back to Nakatsugawa for the express (about 7000JPY) as the Nagiso express trains to Kiso Fukushima were at odd times and the last one was leaving around 3ish from memory, so bear that in mind if you have to get back to the ryokan for dinnerat a set time.

I think it would be possibly better to go to Tsumago first and end up at Magome which is handier to Nakatsugawa. Magome is much more interesting anyway, though I have found it a lot more lively on the weekend, and as is pretty typical of countryside Japan, it starts getting quiet after about 3PM.
