Magose or Matsumoto pass 2024/10/14 19:56
Hello everyone!
Would you give me some advice regarding these two hikes : Magose and Matsumoto pass? I am not sure to have time to do both and I don't know which one to choose. It is hard because they both seem beautiful!
Thank you!
Lucille

Can you clarify:
Magose I guess is the walk from
Tsumago to Magome? Right?

Matsumoto pass? Not sure. Are you talking about the Nakasendo? Pass between Lake Suwa and Matsumoto? Some other pass? Matsumoto is surrounded by mountains so a lot of passes as well.

These are two trail sections along the Iseji in the Kumano region (https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4959.html). Practicalities depend a lot on your means of transportation. Public transport (trains) come with the advantage that you can walk from station to station, but trains are not very frequent. Travel by car means that you can travel more flexibly, but you will have to backtrack to your car either on foot, by taxi or by train or bus.

A lot of detailed planning will go into it, but with an early start on the day, I suspect that packing in both walks should be possible. They are both not too long.

Thanks both of you for you answers.

Indeed, I'm talking about Kumano kodo hikes! I did hike a little bit of the Nakasendo a few years ago, and it was really nice.

Transportation won't be a problem for us. But Uji, you are right, it has to be considered. We will travel by car by the way.

I believe the Matsumoto pass can be combined with Onigajo cliffs via a trail through Onigajo castle remains, so we would not have to back track.

Maybe someone who has done both hikes through Magose pass and Matsumoto pass could tell me if there are different regarding scenery and atmosphere?
