Cherry blossom expert needed - Tazawako 2025/4/24 21:15
Hi All,

Seems a silly question but I'm too reluctant to decide. That's why I need your help :)

I'm now at Lake Tazawa. I have plan to leave on 26 Apr. However, I'm tempted to stay and wait for the cherry blossoms blooming. The buds of some trees around the lake today are showing more pink color and swelling. Some are even beginning to split slightly at the tips, with the petals just starting to peek out.

Can I bet to extend my stay at Tazawako till 29 Apr? I mean I have to reschedule the ticket and pay the charge. It's quite costly and the maximum I can stay here is till 29 Apr. I actually searched but all the forecasts mainly focus on Kakunodate, Takano. I found none about Lake Tazawa specifically.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks

I couldn't find any forecasts for Tazawako. It does not seem to be famous for cherry trees. And I am not sure whether you saw Somei Yoshino trees or possibly a different variety. But from your description it sounds like there were no blossoms open yet. Considering the forecast temperatures - which are on the lower side - I would expect the best viewing not to be reached before the 29th. Why don't you travel to a nearby spot that is already near or at its best, such as Hirosaki or Hakodate?

Why not ask in your hotel or local tourist office. But from your description bloom seems to be about a week away.

@Uji, I just visited both (day trip). I have special feelings for this lake and I couldn't find much information so I'm tempted to see it in bloom.

@LikeBike, I did ask but they have no clue. The lake area is not famous for sakura, though I find quite a number of trees around the lake. I think they don't keep track because it's not famous or gaining any attention. Just me.

Btw, if it's a week away so I shouldn't bet :(

Is it part of sakura watching or a really or a is it a seperate custom.

I saw it on TV and i liked the Idea.

Cherry blossoms right next to water often bloom a little later than those away from water. If you are still waiting for cherry blossoms is there someplace away from water in the area? They might bloom a little sooner. Also anything next to south-facing rocks or walls will have a slightly warmer microclimate and probably bloom a little sooner.

@Uji, @LikeBike, @Beth F

I did stay till 29Apr. It was full blooming near Tatsuko statue :)

The trees on the opposite side remained closed till 7May, as the guesthouse owner updated me. Thanks for your kind response.

People go out in late spring/early dummer and sit on the grass and drink shincha.
I thought it was cool, but maybe i misunderstood and they we're drinking it while watching Cherry flowers.

On TV they said they we're celebrating shincha, and i Loved the Idea .

So many fellow tea enthusiastd, pitty If they we're just watching cherry blossoms

@Ken watanabe

Wow. First time I heard about this culture. I did sit down on grass and do ohanami. People around me were drinking different things, more bottled or canned drinks. I can't recall seeing tea pots. Or maybe they put new tea in their thermo :)
