cozy guesthouse 2 hours from tokyo 2025/4/27 19:54
Hi!
I recently been in okutama in an amazing guesthouse (Kiyokawa Guest House). It was surrounded by forests and rivers, it was cold inside and cozy inside, clean and friendly! Also okutama is off the beaten path and was feeling remote and unique. Ifm looking for another place like that, up to 2 hours from tokyo. Any ideas? Thanks!

I had a wonderful experience in Chichibu in a very simple ryokan / guesthouse. I wouldnft call it cozy though and definomly go in a season where you donft need heating nor cooling as the building is old, very old with some cracks in the floor (you can see the outside through some parts of the floor). But it was super cheap and the breakfast dinner is served outside while looking at the mountains opposite

Another special place is an old schoool on Boso peninsula I stayed at a few weeks ago. Heguri Hub.
Also this one is very simple but comes with ac. Dinner can be a bit more difficult to procure.
And again, not sure i would call it cozy. But staying in a school is kind of special

An other guesthouse that you could call cozy I stayed at in Karuizawa came to mind.

Nozawa onsen is probably more than 2 h away from Tokyo. But I quite like Lodge Hannenkamm (probably in the winter itfs crazy full with Australian ski tourists) but I always went in autumn. The owner is a really good cook so I recommend their half board. But she also drive me down (and up again) to the village.

If you call them they will make you a better price than through Booking.com. They are used to foreign visitors so I guess their English is quite good.

Chichibu and Nagatoro are nice areas if you go out of very busy seasons. Nozawa onsen is also nice and it has good water. Australians seem to be everywhere in Japan at the moment but I think almost 1 million went to Japan last year.

The Izu peninsula is nice (I like Ks House Ito) but it can get busy due to its short distance from Tokyo.
