Osaka immigration + late check in

I am seeking some help. My flight lands at 8pm in Osaka.
I would like to know how long immigration etc takes at KIX?

My plan was to base myself in Kyoto for the next 3 days.
Is it better to stay in Osaka the first night (as it is too late to check in at Kyoto? ) I understand most hotels recommend early check in?
Or can I go straight to Kyoto to a hotel near the station?

It would be inconvenient to change hotels. Sì better search for a hotel close to Kyoto station tgat offers latish checkin. You would actually not arrive THAT late in Kyoto. Probably around 22-23:00. Normal hotels are open for checkin at such times. Much later and you run out of train options but with a 20:00 arrival you should be safe.

KIX Immigration and Customs was really quick for us (but it was at 8.30 AM, not at night) using the online pre filled option.

Most hotels have 24 hour Reception: check with where you are planning to stay.
Then work out the travel options form Kyoto Station to your hotel.
