Quieter day trip out of Kyoto 2025/8/13 14:59
First time visit to Japan in December, so we will / have to do the usual circuit -

But as we are giving ourselves 5 nights in Kyoto over New Year (leaving Jan 1 back to Tokyo), I would like to do one day trip from Kyoto that is slower paced, quieter. Good food - relaxing day -

Suggestions? Kobe? Other place?

My kids want to do Nara - but want to leave one other day for an easy quieter day trip -

Thanks so much in advance for your contributions/ideas!

Kobe is definitely nice, and while a bit far, is doable as a day-trip from Kyoto. I'm not sure I'd describe it as "quiet" option, though, seeing as how it's one of Japan's largest cities and also one of its most popular tourist destinations.

If youfre heading to Kobe, you might also want to check out Himeji.

Shiga Prefecture has some very interesting places, such as Hikone and Omi Hachiman. Even closer in Shiga, Otsu (a quick train ride from Kyoto) has a number of excellent temples that I would actually recommend as being more enjoyable to visit than the tourist magnet sites in Kyoto. Ishiyamadera, Miidera, and Saikyoji are all well worth visiting, for example. If your kids have limited tolerance for temples or if you have limited tolerance for insanely crowded sites, you might want to go to one or more of those and skip the (in)famous Kiyomizudera.

You wonft find complete solitude at any of these places, as Japanese tourists are familiar with them and a few savvy foreign tourists will go to them (although I have seen almost none at those three excellent temples). But they will definitely be much quieter than the famous sites in Kyoto. If you want to experience the ambience of a fine historic temple complex, you are better off getting away from the ultra-popular sites in Kyoto. But another alternative would be to choose less-crowded sites in Kyoto. There are a great many to choose from if you just do a little research.

So many options.

Shiga prefecture is definitely a good idea. Eg Otsu and temples there. Or Omi Hachiman. Or also Hikone.

In Kyoto itself Ohara is quiet(er) and very nice with multiple temples and a great restaurant in a pickles factory right at the entrance to the village. However check when they are open. Many places will be closed until about 3rd or 4th of January.
Here a link to my last visit there

Nara Prefecture is also always great. I specially love the area around Imaicho, Azuka, Hasedera. Specially Imaicho and Hasedera are also easy to reach by public transport from Kyoto.
Here some links to trips I did in that region

https://bicycletraveljapan.blogspot.com/2017/11/day-43-yamatoyagi-to-o...

Other great spots in Nara Prefecture could be Chogosonchiji . Probably a bit harder to reach by public transport

Or Horyuji
https://bicycletraveljapan.blogspot.com/2017/11/day-41-nara-to-yamatoy...

Now I personally can visit a lot of temples without getting bored. But thatfs not the case for everyone.

An other definition of a relaxing day would be a day in an onsen, if you think you and your kids can enjoy that.

Or a longer walk might also be something different. Itfs in the winter so mountains might be a bit difficult (although in my experience at the end of the year in the mountains directly around Kyoto there is little snow. But maybe something like Yamanobe no michi could be nice. Small villages, a not too difficult walk between them. And some temples to visit. And you are never very far from public transport.

Regarding Kobe I have never been. So canft comment on its qualities.

You could even stay in Kyoto and go to some lesser well known places and just have a relaxing day.

Nara is quiet. Everything is spread out. So while lots of tourists visit. It doesn't feel crowed.

But it depends on your interests.

Fushimi, Kurama, Hikone, Nakayama, omi-hachiman all offer different interests.

Actually, Kyoto itself can be quieter than you may think. An easy way to find out is to take slow trains such as the so-called Araden.

Don't go to Arashiyama, though, because that's where the crowd is. Hop off at smaller stations like Nishi-in and walk through narrow streets toward residential areas. You'll find old-fashioned homes and niche cafes.

And you can do similar things in any city. It's been decades since I last visited Nara, but I'm sure you can avoid touristic crowds by taking trains that locals take.

I agree that Kyoto has also many spots quite deserted. We have cycled to Mt Hiei (cablecar to top), Kibune, Kurama. Fushimi (not Fushimi Inari). Kitano area.
Biwako is always great - Omi Hachiman for sure!

Re: Quieter day trip out of Kyoto 2025/8/14 19:13
I like Ucofs suggestion of using local trains in Kyoto such as the Keifuku streetcar (sometimes also called Randen). Keihan is another train company that has a more extensive network but goes to a lot of interesting local places. For the northern area, Eizan is another. One thing that I like to do is get a day pass for one of those train companies (there is also a day pass that covers Keifuku plus the subway system, which is quite useful) and come up with a route that includes some planned stops (for example, at non-famous temples with lovely gardens) but also allows me to wander around and explore. If you get on and off a few times the day pass pays off very nicely.

I think you will have an entirely different experience of Kyoto if you go to some places where all of the tourists donft go. You can even have a (mostly) quiet day in Arashiyama if you avoid the bamboo forest and the other dozen or so places that are visited by a lot of foreign tourists. One of my favorite places in Kyoto, a small and welcoming little temple where I am often the only person there, is in Arashiyama, a stonefs throw from a popular temple that gets busloads of tourists all day long. It is so peaceful, and definitely quiet. There are many other quiet places in Arashiyama, although at times you might have to encounter the throng briefly while walking to them. But you simply have to let go of the compulsion to limit your sightseeing to places that are on all the list of sites that you ghave toh go to.

So if you want a quiet day, you donft even have to leave Kyoto. It can be as easy as you want to make it. Or you can go someplace close. There is nothing wrong with Kobe or Himeji, but you would just be adding places that are seriously overtouristed, and you probably already have enough of those.

Go to Nara. Hikone is good. I still do not know why people go to Kobe when there are better places to go. I'd even visit Osaka rather than Kobe, and I'm certainly not a fan of Osaka.
Five nights in Kyoto will pass by pretty quickly. Consider some less visited locations like Fushimi - not Fushimi-Inari (Fushimi-Motoyama - has a very non-touristy fell to the area).

Hi,

When I was in Kyoto in may , I went to Daikakuji temple after arashiyma bamboo forest and the temple was very quiet. There is a beautiful Osawa pond ( very large) beside the temple and I only saw one other person as i walked round it .
The Kyoto railway museum is very good
The Expo 1970 park ( north of Osaka by a monorail station) is very large and loved the expo 1970 pavilion detailing the 1970 expo with exhibits and photos and the huge japanese garden
