I found the Chiran Museum very moving (albeit limited info in English at the time we visited, almost 10 yrs ago). Chiran town also is worth a quick look as it has some old residences and was good as a lunch stop.

We hired a car at the time, because the public transport options were poor (this may have changed). The nice thing about hiring a car was that we could go one way via the coast (Ibusuki for the sand baths, perhaps?) and the other way more direct and with hilly scenery.

I also drove there as public transport on the Satsuma peninsula is pretty sparse. The best information I could find is here: https://www.city.minamikyushu.lg.jp/kankosite/access/5573.html

As I don't read Japanese - others on the forum might know more than I

Though I am Japanese I can't find better information than mfedley posted.

The timetable in the middle of the page is not text but picture so I think you can see as it is.

Kagoshima Chuo is ŽŽ™“‡’†‰› while the museum is close to “ÁUŠÏ‰¹“üŒû (5 min walk).

In case you can't read Japanese character I posted I will write some departures.

The first bus departs Kagoshima Chuo at 6:50 while the next one departs at 9:30 which might be appropriate. The return trip bus departs at 13:36, 14:36 and 15:56.

The link and details kindly provided by the two previous posters look good, but if you are still a little nervous about getting on the right bus at the right time, you could maybe contact the Kagoshima tourism officials at the following website (scroll to the very bottom of the page and you will see a contact form under the heading Helpful Resources):
https://www.kagoshima-kankou.com/for

Here is the URL for the form itself:

In the past I have gotten helpful information at the tourist information center in Kagoshima Chuo Station. I cannot find a web page for this center to verify that it is still operating, but according to Google Maps (usually fairly reliable, but sometimes not), they open at 8 a.m. Very nice people there. They helped me with information and a day pass when I went to Ibusuki to visit Healthy Land and the Kagoshima Flower Park, two very nice places. I took buses both times and they were very reliable.

I started to browse around that site and saw that they have some good, up-to-date brochures in PDF format. Ifm planning an upcoming trip to Kagoshima myself, and the Kagoshima City guide map looks particularly helpful. I really love Kagoshima! If you like aquariums (or need something to do on a rainy day) I recommend the one there. It doesnft have penguins and dolphin shows, just good tanks and exhibits devoted to local marine life. It is a nicely designed building with some lovely art and a good view of Sakurajima from the resting area. I canft wait to go back myselfc

Herefs a link to the brochures page:

Whoops! I was wrong. I just looked at the aquarium brochure, and apparently they DO have dolphin showsc. I guess aquariums in Japan feel that these are mandatory. I never go to them myself.

I am also planning to visit the Chiran Peace Museum, and found this timetable for the bus from Kagoshima Chuo to Chiran (updated in February 2025, found via Google search)
https://www.iwasaki-corp.com/wp-content/uploads/dd4ec1e1e0637cd819ddd2...

According to Navitime, it's 1140 yen one-way, so I will get the 2-day pass at 2200.

To see the route, you can try this website (sorry, it's terribly user-unfriendly):
https://qbus.jp/

However, as Kim suggested, I am also planning visit the tourism information office. Although I feel reasonably prepared, I think it's better to double check.

Update!
By searching "Kagoshima Kotsu Bus Timetable ( Ibusuki Area )", I landed on this page:
https://www.kagoshima-kankou.com/for/traffic/53553
--> https://www.iwasaki-corp.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2025/05/25.4.1...

It has a more recent timetable (April 2025). They only differ by 1~2 minutes, but still.

Thanks for the update. Itfs always best to check schedules shortly before you go, as they can change seasonally or for whatever reason.

By the way, this is off the original topic, but since I mentioned Healthy Land (Onsen) earlier I will add that they have been closed for renovation for quite a while, but are scheduled to re-open October 26. (Best to confirm before going.) The rotenburo there is one of my favorites in Japan (very simple, at least it used to be, but great oceanside ambience). Itfs a bit of a nuisance to get there without a car, though.

@Kim
Not OP, but I just re-checked the Healthy land onsen... The reopening was already postponed from May originally, to October, so I had some hopes as I am visiting early November. But their current status says that they are planning to reopen on November 26. Welp, it will be for another trip!

Re: Kagoshima Chuo to Chiran Peace museum 2025/9/12 00:37
Oh, darnc Sorry, I was looking at the Ibusuki tourism website for the Healthy Land gHoyokanh facility, which is apparently still planning to open October 26 (and they have some sort of gopening eventh scheduled). I didnft realize the Tamatebako onsen (that sublime rotenburo spot) is not opening until a month later. They are both on the Healthy Land site, but I donft think Ifd go all the way out there if the Tamatebako onsen isnft open yet. I might try Hoyokan sometime, butc

If you do go (whenever), check to see if they still have the alternating schedule (menfs/womenfs rotenburo), and pick a day when you get the view of Kaimondake. At least in the past, one of the baths is nice, but you canft see Kaimondake from it. Possibly they have reconfigured things.

Can someone give me a detailed info how to get from Kagoshima Chuo station to Chiran Peace museum

It takes about 1 and a half hour.
You travel mostly by bus then walk for several minutes.

Buses for Chiran depart
from Kagoshima-chūō Station “Œ16 bus stand.
: “Œ (higashi) = east(ern).

The one way bus fare will be
1180 yen until September 2025
and 1280 yen from October.

Bus stop “ÁUŠÏ‰¹“üŒû (Tokkō Kannon Iriguchi)
is close to Chiran Peace Museum.
When you head to the museum, this is the last stop for your bus.

When you get back,
ŽŽ™“‡’†‰›‰w (Kagoshima-chūō Station)
is not the last stop for your bus.

: Only major bus stops are listed here on the timetables (image).
: There exist 48 bus stops
between Kagoshima-chūō Station and Tokkō Kannon Iriguchi.

The museum is open until 17:00, with admission given by 16:30.
It sounds better to catch, at latest, the 12:10 bus.

Shinkansen trains use Tracks 11 to 14.
You go down to the concourse,
get out through the exit gate,
turn to the right,
walk a little,
then you go down to Sakurajima Exit (÷“‡Œû) [East Exit].

You turn to the left,
pass by taxi stands,
then you see the bus terminal on your right.
Find “Œ16 bus stand.
