Train back from Nikko to Asakusa 2025/9/23 23:25
We are going to Nikko on Oct. 1. I have bought Nikko World Heritage Passes for myself and my husband and limited express train tickets for both of us to get there. However, I have not purchased our train tickets back to Asakusa yet because I wasn't sure how much time it would take to get through the sites. Will I have trouble getting seats for our train tickets back if they are purchased at the Tobu-Nikko station later in the day, and should I just go ahead and guestimate our finishing time and purchase them? Since Oct. 1 is the middle of the week on a Wednesday...will that make a difference? Any insight or suggestions into this would be helpful.

No, you won't have any problems getting tickets, assuming you're not trying to get reserved seats. Most Japanese trains have unreserved seats, and there is no limit on the amount of tickets sold for them, so it's not possible for them to sell out.

Note, though, that the fastest limited express trains tend to be reserved-seat only, and so there is a chance of them selling out, so if you want to minimize the amount of time you'll be spending in the train on your way back, you might want to book tickets ahead of time. But if your concern is simply whether or not you'll be able to get a ticket from Nikko back to Tokyo without making a reservation ahead of time, you'll be OK.

Oct. 1 is the middle of the week on a Wednesday...

Thatfs a normal weekday.
I suppose seats of Limited Express would not get fully reserved.

I wasn't sure how much time it would take to get through the sites.

Which sites do you plan to visit?

If you go to Chuzenji area
(Chuzenji Temple, Kegon Waterfall, Lake Chuzenjiko, etc.)
in addition to Toshogu - Rinnoji area,
it would be in the evening that you come back.

The sun sets at 17:24 (5:24 pm).
I suggest you secure your seats
on a train departing between 5 and 6 pm.
If you come back much earlier to Tōbu-nikkō Station,
consult the ticket counter and check the vacancy in other trains.
