Winter in Aizu-wakamatsu & Ouchijuku 2026 2025/10/6 13:11
Hi folks, I remember watching Yae no Sakura series about the Bosshin War, so I've been wanting to visit Aizu-wakamatsu: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7700.html

I have 2 nights to spare (10-11 Feb), coming from Tokyo and arriving in Aizu in the afternoon around 2:30pm. I love exploring Japanese arts & history, nature/castle photography, but have never explored these areas in winter, and assume they have less transport running.

My questions are:

1. For the first day (10 Feb): would I still have enough time to visit Tsuruga Castle plus a short break at the nearby Tea House considering I'll arrive in the Aizu-wakamatsu train station around 2:30pm? I plan to take the trains from Tokyo, which seems to require a transfer: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7701.html

2. For the second day (11 Feb): I plan on skipping Bukeyashiki samurai mansion and focus on Ouchijuku due to time constraints: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7710.html Is this a good idea or should I try to squeeze in Bukeyashiki?

3. I struggle to find the bus schedule for Aizu-wakamatsu to Ouchijuku. All I have is phone numbers to their bus offices: https://www-aizubus-com.translate.goog/sightseeing/area_oouchijuku?stt...

And this bus timetable list: https://www-aizubus-com.translate.goog/rosen/jikokuhyou?_x_tr_sl=ja&_x...

Should I try using train instead: Aizu-Wakamatsu Station > Yunokami Onsen Station > taxi ride as recommended by Japan Guide?

Please kindly help.

1) yes, the castle is not that big and also the park and the teahouse should be fine with the remaining time. the open time is until 5pm, so it should be possible if you do not waste much time before, so i recommend this order: castle => teahouse => rest of the park

2) instead of the residence you should check the sazaedo temple which is way more impressive, cause it is more unique. i would do bukeyashiki only if you combine it with some onsen soak in higashiyama onsen...

if you really are interested in samurai i rather recommend nisshinkan, which is a very unique samurai school. i was in japan more than 20 times, but i never saw anywhere something like this, and it is a super secret gem. dont tell anyone!

3) i personally did not like ouchijuku cause it is soooo touristic but maybe since you go in february it will be better. i used a car to get there, so i can not give you details. in any case it seems there are plenty of buses going there.

PS: also Oyaku Garden https://maps.app.goo.gl/E2qvtd4bXEpZwyG49 is quite nice and somehow different than regular gardens (it is a japanese herb garden) and often overseen

Bear in mind that the sun will set at about 5:10 in mid Feb so I agree to go straight to the castle.

I found Ouchi Juku a little disappointing for the reasons given above. I would probably skip it unless it's a must visit for you as the buses from Yunokami onsen do not run in the winter. If I did go I would do the train to Yunokami onsen & taxi route.

Personally I liked Bukeyashiki and would do that, Sazaedo temple & Nisshinkan (which I've only just found out about, thanks @Glimpigumpi) on day 2

I think Oyako garden is a good place to visit at certain times of the year. I was there in Sept & all the herbs were finished for the year & it was a little underwhelming. It might look good with a covering of snow.

Thank you for the tips Glimpigumpi & Stan,

I've been to Magome and Tsumago and they were nice. I was hoping Ouchijuku would be like that especially in winter.

However, Sazaedo Temple & Nisshikan are intriguing. However, the website for Nisshikan goes to a 403 error page, but I'm hoping they are still open in 2026. Is there a public transport that goes to Nisshikan from Aizu-wakamatsu. How long did it take you to explore Nisshikan?

And yes, I will stay overnight in Higashiyama Onsen, so I might visit Bukeyashiki if I have time on that day. Is the wooden pagoda in Iiyama Hill worth visiting?

Correction, I just realised the wooden pagoda = Sazaedo =)

Magome and Tsumago are way better. They feels more authentic and are way longer to walk, people actually live there, while basically Ouchijuku is a huge touristic shopping street, with lots of tour-groups, where the actual daily life is happening behind those houses. (but is not much different from normal rural japanese towns). you will need like 1h max to see all. but make your own impression, maybe i was just shocked about the sheer amount of tourists and that there is nothing to see beside shops and a small town museum

Nisshikan should be active still, i saw google reviews just a few days ago. according to this page, it should be reachable also with the city loop bus:
https://fukushima.travel/destination/aizu-hanko-nisshinkan/65

Sazaedo is a must see cause truly unique in all Japan (and even world), so i would prefer it before Bukeyashiki, which is not bad, but you can find similar buildings all over Japan.

Thank you very much Glimpi, I have decided to do Nisshinkan + Sazaedo instead of Ouchijuku. I'm a bit nerdy and like visiting temples and it's rare to be able to get into a pagoda, plus I want to try Kyudo.

Since you have been to both places, would you recommend I visit Sazaedo in the morning then Nisshinkan in the afternoon?

It's unfortunate you cannot arrive earlier on day 1. If you have a full day, you can visit the castle, Oyakuen, the Bukeyashiki, and the Sazaedo all in one day and then go to the Ouchijuku on day 2.

The Ouchi-juku is really nice. I liked it better than Magome. There aren't really any places with the same type of preserved buildings as Ouchi-juku, so it's one-of-a-kind. Negi-soba is a unique food to Ouchi-juku, too. You can also walk up to the lookout point to see the iconic view of the whole street from above. If there is snow, it is really beautiful. When I visited, it was around New Years, and it wasn't so crowded. I don't know how it is now or how it will be this winter, but it's memorable.

Hello Rabbityama, Ifm not sure how much earlier I can arrive at Aizu-wakamatsu since I will be arriving from Tokyo.

However, I of have a full day the next day and at Higashiyama Onsen.

Not sure about the logistics of transport in winter. Potentially:

1. Day 1: Tsuruga Castle + Teahouse + Park
2. Day 2: Ouchijuku
3. Day 3: Nisshinkan + Sazaedo + transfer to Higashiyama Onsen by 4pm

My concern is there is no bus going to Ouchijuku in winter. And Ifm unsure if Day 3 is too packed? I need to be back at Higashiyama Onsen to check in, chill and see their winter candle festival.

Do you think this schedule is not too rushed?

The website says the bus runs to Ouchi-juku every day from Yunokami Onsen Station:
https://www.gurutto-aizu.com/detail/622/freepage-4.html

You should reserve the bus at least a day in advance.

Alternatively, it is just a 10 minute taxi ride, but the bus is the cheapest.

You may be able to also visit To no Hetsuri, a nearby scenic spot.

Re: Winter in Aizu-wakamatsu & Ouchijuku 2026 2025/10/22 21:22
well, hojo36: your plan sounds now perfectly fine.

if you have the time left on some day, you can squeeze in Sazaedo in any, so you will have more time on the other days

I agree to Rabbityama, To no Hetsuri was very nice, highly recommended, just wondering if it will be fine in winter also.

And about Ouchijuku: it seems there is much difference in liking this place or not :-) i guess in winter it is better than in summer, but OP: could you do me a favour? i am really interested how you liked this place, can you maybe post your experience after you have been there here? i am just very curious, how you jugde this place in the end.

enjoy your trip!

Thank you for the bus schedule Rabbityama, and yes Glimpi, if I do end up going to Ouchijuku next winter (Feb 2026), I will post my experience here as an update.

I will include Sazaedo on the other days to free up my third day if I can.

Thank you very much everyone!
