How do I travel on from Gokayama?

I would like to visit Gokayama (both the smaller villages near it, too) and I can reserve a spot on the Nohi bus from Kanazawa (where I will be staying). However, once I get off in Gokayama, I cannot board any bus from there.

I also do not want to visit Shirakawa -go (due to the over touristy vibe) and would like to move on to Takayama as I will overnight there.

I can find info. on reserving and buying seats for Kanazawa to Gokayama.
I an also buy tickets for Shirakawa go-Takayama.

But how do I buy tickets from Gokayama to ?
I can't find out how to get to Takayama directly after seeing the villages in Gokayama.
Any suggestions, please.

You can't! The buses between Takaoka, Gokayama and SHirakawago are fully unreserved. You just board them and pay on board, like a city bus:

I understood that I cannot board any buses in the direction of Shirakawa go or Takayama as they only allow you to get off in Gokayama. That is what I am reading in the timetable you linked to.
Is the alternative to travel to Takaoka from Kanazawa and board the bus from there? I believe it makes stops in all the Gassho hut villages. Then, I could board and disembark in the direction of Takayama.

No, no such limitations on boarding exist. Not sure where you find them. They exist for the Nohi/Hokutetsu buses between Kanazawa and Shirakawago, but not for the above-linked Kaetsuno buses between Takaoka and Shirakawago. You can board and alight these buses at any stop.

However, I think it refers to the Kanazawa bus only, now that I read it several times.
So, could I take the Nohi bus and get off at Suganuma and then take the local bus or is it better to travel to Takaoka (from Kanazawa) and take the bus from there?
I have to book the Nohi bus soon as they may run out of reserved seating.

This is waht I would do:

a) if traveling from west to east:
East (e.g. Tokyo) - Takaoka - Suganuma - Shirakawago - Kanazawa - West (e.g. Kyoto)

b) if traveling from west to east:
West (e.g. Kyoto) - Kanazawa - Shirakawago - Suganuma - Takaoka - East (e.g. Tokyo)

c) if traveling from east and back:
East (e.g. Tokyo) - Takaoka - Suganuma - Shirakawago - Takaoka (or Kanazawa or Toyama) - East (e.g. Tokyo)

d) if traveling from west and back:
West (e.g. Kyoto) - Kanazawa - Suganuma - Shirakawago - Kanazawa - West (e.g. Kyoto)

I thought I had it all figured out till I read that line on the Suganuma page about not being allowed to board the bus in the direction of Shirakawa.

For future readers:
I have now gone directly to both Nohi Bus and Kaetsunu Bus web sites and pieced together the info. with Uji's help and patience.

Take the Nohi bus from Kanazawa to Gokayama (need advance reservation)
Take the Kaetsunou bus (no advance reservation so just board and pay) to Suganuma
Take the same bus company to Shirakawa
Take the Nohi bus (with advance reservation) to Takayama.

Alternatively, I could travel to Takaoka (from Kanazawa) and board the Kaetsunou bus from there, and follow the itinerary as written above.

There is a third option but it is much for expensive and it is a bus tour (White Ring Co.)for 13K Yen per person with a round trip and lunch included from and back to Kanazawa. They visit Gokayama , Shirakawa and Takayama historic villages. They allow you to disembark in Takayama but you don't get any partial refunds.

I hope I got that info. right.

There is no need to take a bus from the Gokayama to the Suganuma bus stop.

Also note that many people find Ainokura more interesting than Suganuma, because it feels more like a functioning village than Suganuma.
