Travelling from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki 2025/10/16 17:44
Hi,

I will be traveling from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki station via Hakata station. I will be taking the Relay KAMOME express from Hakata station to Nagasaki. From the JR Kyushu website, I can purchase the tickets online, but it seems like I need to collect the physical ticket at Hakata station. Is this correct?

I haven't been to Hakata Station before, not sure if the station is huge? Want to know where I can collect the physical tickets. Just want to ensure I cater enough time for the collection of the ticket before the train to Nagasaki.

Thanks for your advice.

You can receive your ticket not only in JR-Kyushu area but also in JR-West area including Shin-Osaka.

https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/train_reservation/receive/

By the way, it costs about 21000 yen from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki while this pass valid for 7 days is 26000 yen so you may better consider.

Do you come to Japan?
(I ask this because foreign residents cannot use JR-issued rail passes.)

Note that JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation is not designed for rail pass users.

https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/faq/tr.html

I will be taking the Relay KAMOME express from Hakata station to Nagasaki.

Not directly to Nagasaki.

Limited Express Relay KAMOME
brings you to Takeo-Onsen Station.
There you can make a transfer
door-to-door to Nishi-Kyūshū Shinkansen,
unlike most other Shinkansen transfer stations.

Shin-Ōsaka -> Hakata
by Sanyo Shinkansen (NOZOMI | MIZUHO).
Hakata -> Takeo-Onsen
by Limited Express (Relay KAMOME).
Takeo-Onsen -> Nagasaki
by Nishi-Kyūshū Shinkansen (KAMOME).

You can book
your Sanyo-Sanfin Northern Kyushu Area Pass
and your seats
(for NOZOMI | MIZUHO, Relay KAMOME and KAMOME)
through the JR-West website,
though itfs relatively user-unfriendly.

- Maps of Shin-Ōsaka Station
https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/timetable/pdf/station_shin-osaka.pd...

On the 1st and the 2nd maps,
you find a red star sign to indicate the JR ticket office
around the south corner of the conventional line zone,
which faces the pathway outside the entrance gates.
There you can collect your pass and seat tickets.

(The Shinkansen zone of Shin-Ōsaka
is managed by JR-Central,
so you cannot collect there
Sanyo-Sanfin Northern Kyushu Area Pass
or related tickets.)

With your pass and seat ticket for NOZOMI | MIZUHO,
you can get through South Gate into the Shinkansen concourse.

Westbound Shinkansen trains
depart at Tracks 20, 21 and 22.

To get to the platform for Track 20,
please change elevators once.
You can go directly to the platform for Tracks 21 and 22.

Enjoy your trips!

hi omotenashi, frog1954,

thanks so much for your guidance and recommendation. I will only be taking a one way train ride to Nagasaki as I will be driving from Nagasaki to other parts of Kyushu, so the Sanyo-Sanfin Northern Kyushu Area Pass (26000 yen) does not pay off.

From Shin-Osaka to Hakata: 15820 yen.
From Hakata to Nagasaki: 6050 yen.
Total: 21820 yen vs 26000 yen

Therefore, can you kindly guide me to make the train ticket purchase for the trip from Hakata Station to Nagasaki Station?

Thank you.

You can buy through ticket from Shin-Osaka (from inside the municipal area of Osaka city including Shin-Osaka) to Nagasaki via JR West or JR Kyushu website. You can pickup it at major stations around Osaka. Of course you can pick up at Hakata, but it is not practical. Normally, you should pickup it at JR Osaka station and then get on conventional JR rail to Shin-Osaka and then get on your Shinkansen.

is there any way to buy my tickets online first?

Would prefer to secure and buy my seats in advance, instead of doing it after I land in Osaka.

You can purchase tickets online here:

https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/

Unless it's an extremely busy period, reserved seats on the train from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki are rarely sold out.

Are you flying into Osaka (probably KIX) and heading straight to Nagasaki? In that case, I recommend not reserving online train tickets from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki. The departure time from KIX varies depending on the situation.

If flying is an option, Peach, for example, is much cheaper. There is one direct flight from KIX to Nagasaki per day. There are even more flights to Nagasaki from Itami, Osaka's another airport.

Whether flying is the best option also depends on the date and flight number you're taking.

Hi Frog1954,

Thanks for the tips on the plane. I will be flying into KIX but staying in Osaka for few nights so won't be taking plane to Nagasaki.

Can I know which platform will the Shinkansen arrive into at Hakata Station? And which platform will the Relay KAMOME express depart from? Do I need to go through any gates for this transfer? Just want to ensure that I cater enough time for the transfer and not be in a mad rush.

Thank you.

You donft need to know the arriving platform at Hakata. Just go down following the overhead signage (red panel showing JR Line Entrance - Central Transfer Gate) and red line on the floor. At the transfer gate you need to insert three tickets: the base fare ticket, Shinkansen ticket until Hakata and Relay Kamome ticket. The Shinkansen ticket will be collected so you will receive the base fare ticket and the Relay Kamome ticket.

The Relay Kamome will depart from platform No. 3 or 4.

hi Frog1954,

how long will the entire transfer take at Hakata station? Will 30 mins be enough?

Thank you.

According to the author of this blog,

A transfer time of around 15 minutes after getting off the Sanyo Shinkansen will be safe.

Furthermore, considering the need for toileting and buying drinks,

20 minutes will give you plenty of time.

For reference,

From my experience, it's possible to make a transfer within 10 minutes.

I once had a Shinkansen train delay that delayed my arrival at Hakata Station,

so I had to transfer from the 17:06 arriving train at Hakata Station to the 17:13 departing Midori Limited Express.

The transfer time was 7 minutes.

Of course, you can't use the toilet or shop at convenience stores, etc.

I made my transfer without any hassle, following the route introduced here.

Station signs are mostly written in Japanese, but if you look closely you'll see some in English, so be sure not to miss the Transfer Gate and platforms 3 and 4. If you don't know where you are, just show your Relay Kamome ticket to a uniformed station attendant and ask for directions.

Re: Travelling from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki 2025/10/18 15:08

staying in Osaka for few nights

So, you have time more than enough to pick up your ticketsc.

Is your Osaka hotel close to Shin-Ōsaka Station?

- JR-West: Sanyo-Shinkansen One-Way Ticket
https://www.westjr.co.jp/travel-information/en/tickets-passes/oneway/s...

This discount ticket should be ordered before you come to Japan.
It works as combined basic fare ticket and Shinkansen surcharge ticket.

(A-1) Discount Shinkansen one-way ticket
: Shin-Ōsaka -> Hakata.
(A-2) Shinkansen seat designation ticket
: Shin-Ōsaka -> Hakata.
(B) Basic fare ticket
: Hakata -> Takeo-Onsen -> Nagasaki.
(C) Limited Express reserved seat ticket
: Hakata -> Takeo-Onsen.
(D) Shinkansen reserved seat ticket
: Takeo-Onsen -> Nagasaki.

frog1954:
At the transfer gate you need to insert three tickets: the base fare ticket, Shinkansen ticket until Hakata and Relay Kamome ticket.

This Shinkansen transfer gate is not specifically for transfers to and from Limited Express.

I think the gate machine doesnft check your Relay Kamome ticket;
Tickets (A-1) and (B) would be enough there.

Re: Travelling from Shin-Osaka to Nagasaki 2025/10/19 08:49
hi omotenashi,

Thank you for your guidance. If I purchase the discounted Sanyo-Shinkansen One-Way Ticket, this means I need to pick up the ticket only when I arrive in Japan. However, for my leg from Hakata to Nagasaki, I will purchase it online before I arrive in Japan as I want to reach Nagasaki at 12pm+ so I want to ensure I get the tickets for the this timing.

Just worried that I can't get the right timing on the Shinkansen for the train from Shin-Osaka to Hakata station in time for me to board the train from Hakata to Nagasaki.

Hakata Station is large but not huge. You shouldn't have any trouble navigating around.
