3 nights in Hakone too much? 2025/11/16 18:49
Hello, we have 3 nights to spend in Hakone. I've read that might be too much? We have airbnb in Odawara. Is 3 nights too much?

I would never stay more than a single night in Hakone. But I prefer a fast travel pace and I am often shocked to see how slow other people prefer to travel. I think it is a question of preference. But Hakone is very touristy, and the amount of sights seem limited to me, unless you plan to play multiple rounds of golf. Then again, three nights can translate to as little as two days in the area. So, if you like a slow travel pace and wish to slow down a little, it can be reasonable.

I am slow traveller, but would say also that 3 nights is too much. However - if Odawara has own sights then maybe ok.
We have been twice in Hakone - 2 nights in ryokan, with onsen and dinner. So 1 full day for sightseeing. Think main thing in Hakone is enjoying onsen.

I'm on my second night in Hakone and I actually wouldn't mind a third! I do agree with the point the first reply stated that it has to do with your preferred pace-- I didn't want to feel rushed and wanted time to rest and/or meander between stretches of active sightseeing (especially after streaks of activities that involved lots of walking/hiking). And like the second reply stated, I guess how long "3 nights" feels depends on how much daytime you have in the area-- the sun has been setting around 4:30p while I've been here, and sometimes that can limit how much you get to do (I forgot to bring flashlight/headlamp so that cut down my time for most outdoor activities). Also some attractions close by 5/5:30 so take that into consideration as well. Hot springs/onsen was one of my main priorities while here, and I definitely wanted to take my time with that (it doesn't make sense to speed through what is supposed to be about slowing down and relaxing). Essentially, if you told me you had 3 FULL days here I could see that feeling like more than you need, but if you arrive 3p or later on that first day, then leave early on your last day, it might feel just right.

Include a side trip to Atami. You are in Odawara, not Hakone, so three nights there is not "too" much.

I wouldn't stay that long, but if I had the time there, I could find enough activities to fill that time, particularly doing some hiking in the area. You could easily go over the the Fuji 5 Lakes area too.
