Fukui Dino Museum + Echizen on same day?

My husband and I will be visiting Fukui in May 2026 as we are both huge dinosaur nerds and want to visit the Dinosaur museum. As we started researching what else to do in Fukui, we also realised we would like to see Echizen Daibutsu.

As both are located in Katsuyama, I started wondering if it would be possible to visit both the Dinosaur Museum and Echizen Daibutsu in the same day, to avoid the need of going to Katsuyama two days in a row.

Are there any of you who have visited both of these sights on the same day? And if so, did you feel you had to rush the visits or was it possible to spend enough time at both sights without it becoming too stressful or hectic?

No issue doing but in the same day - but public transport is very limited (I ended up hitchhiking and walking back to the train station)

I was in Katsuyama about a week ago.

Although I visited them on separate days as I was staying in Katsuyama, it is definitely possible to visit both the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and the Echizen Daibutsu temple on the same day.

I also have to give a warning about the very limited public transport, although on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, they do have extra buses. Unfortunately, when I visited, the bus timings were inconvenient and didn't match my schedule, so at both the museum and the Echizen Daibutsu temple, I asked a staff person to call me a taxi, which was much more convenient. Especially when the special buses do not run, most buses go to Katsuyama Station, which is out of the way between the museum and the temple.

When I visited, the Japanese garden at the temple was closed because of bear and monkey sightings.

Other interesting places to visit in Katsuyama if you have time are Katsuyama Castle, Heisenji Hakusan Shrine, and the Yumeore Katsuyama Textile Factory Museum (where you can hand-weave a coaster or decorate a cocoon).

Additionally, there are many robotic dinosaurs just outside of Fukui Station, as well as in shopping areas there. Of course, there are some in and outside the museum as well.

You definitely won't miss seeing dinosaurs in Fukui City and Katsuyama.

I've done just that and it is easy to see both in a day. But renting a car would be the best way to make it happen. In addition, you could also seo the Heisenji Hakusan Shrine or the Eiheiji Temple near by.

I think it's now safe for us to plan to visit those two locations on the same day, and be prepared to get a taxi due to the infrequent busses :D

Is it possible to rent a bike?

Yes. There is a bicycle rental shop (it seems e-bikes only) at Katsuyama station. This might be a very good way to get around as the distances itself are quite short. Just too long to walk.
