Hiroshima to Miyajima Car Ferry

I would like to drive from Hiroshima city to Miyajima. Is there a car ferry? How and where do I purchase the ticket and what is the cost? Do I need to book the ticket in advance?

The only car ferries to Miyajima depart from Miyajimaguchi, but even these can be used only by residents of Miyajima, if my understanding is correct. There is parking at Miyajimaguchi.

Did you want to drive on Miyajima? As far as tourism goes, it really is not necessary at all.

Why? I cannot think of any parking (checking, some conflicting information, but generally better to park on the mainland), and it is not exactly a place you would/could drive around. Yes, there are roads, but hardly any.
Price for a car would be 1,700 yen (4-5 meter car) including driver, one way. Additional passengers need to pay additional fare.

I prefer to drive to the camping area rather than walking with all my gear.

Are you sure there is a camp ground on Miyajima. According to this page, the only camping area on the island closed in 2024: https://www.miyajima.or.jp/new/mibunrui/tutumigaura_close/
Maybe a new one opened since then?

Also, I take back my statement that only residents can take a car to Miyajima. I can't confirm it.

I have no problem you taking a car onto the island, but I personally would not unless you have some reason we are unaware of.

Taxis are available, and depending on where you're staying they might offer a pick up from the ferry.
