Unuma and Shin-Unuma transfer? 2026/1/24 04:25
Hi, so Jorudan is recommending a train route that has a 4-min gap between two trains, and the transfer involves going from Unuma to Shin-Unuma station. I will have 1 large luggage with me. Can I make this transfer?

The train I'm transferring to is a Meitetsu Limited Express. If I miss that train, will my ticket be valid for the next train which is a "Inuyama Line (Semi-Express Centrair Japan Intl Airport)," or is it not valid?

Thank you!

It is close. If you don't move swiftly, you may miss it.

If I miss that train, will my ticket be valid for the next train which is a "Inuyama Line (Semi-Express Centrair Japan Intl Airport)," or is it not valid?

What ticket? Do you plan to buy one in advance? Most people will use an IC card to ride the Inuyama Line. Seats are all-unreserved on Semi-Express trains, so you can ride any train without prior reservations. Only the rare "ƒÊSKY Limited Express" trains require a seat reservation, while regular limited express trains feature both reserved and unreserved seating. All other trains are all-unreserved.

If you just hop on the train to Inuyama, then don't worry about the transfer. There are departures every few minutes.

There is an aerial walkway between the two stations, approx 150 meters between the two. I have not done this transfer, but it would technically be possible (if you know the route and don't need a lug a big bag).
What I look for in cases like this (tight connections) is to choose a earlier train for the first leg, and then it makes it easier to catch the second train. The rail planning sites (like Jourdan and others that I use) suggest the shortest possible transfer time without the real-life considerations like users with luggage, unfamilarity, or mobility issues.
There are a number of stations and connections I do regularly with my groups and I build in extra time to account for those things. Often it just adds 10 minutes, but removes a lot of stress.

Thanks, Uji and JapanCustomTour! I think I get it now. Is my understanding below correct?

The first train is a Meitetsu Limited Express - apparaently even though it's a limited express I don't need to buy a separate limited express ticket on top of the base fare? So I'll just tap my IC. And in case I miss this train, I can just hop on the next train, which is different: Inuyama Line (Semi-Express Centrair Japan Intl Airport). So as long as I sit on non-reserved seats on both trains, I just need to tap my IC and ride whichever that I can catch?

Thank you!

Yes, your understanding is more or less correct. Meitetsu limited express trains do not require a limited express ticket. So, you can ride them just with your IC card if you use the regular non-reserved seats. However, limited express trains also have some first class seats, called ƒÊ-seats (myu-seats). If you use a ƒÊ-seat, then you need to separately get a ƒÊ-ticket.

Many limited trains have both non-reserved seats and a few ƒÊ-seats; however, there is one special airport train, the "ƒÊSKY Limited Express" that carries only ƒÊ-seats. So, if you want to take the "ƒÊSKY Limited Express", the ƒÊ-ticket is mandatory. (Note that it is possible to buy the ƒÊ-ticket on board of the train, but it is more expensive, and it could be sold out; so it is better to purchase in advance.)

From Shin-Unuma train, there about 8 train departures per hour (or more during rush hours) in the direction of Inuyama and Nagoya every hour. On average, every 7.5 minutes. There are five types of trains:
- typically 2 local trains to Inuyama; all non-reserved
- typically 2 semi-express trains to Nagoya and beyond; all non-reserved
- typically 2 express trains to Nagoya and the airport; all non-reserved
- typically 2 limited express trains to Nagoya and beyond; partly non-reserved, partly ƒÊ-seats
- and a rare ƒÊSKY Limited Express in the mornings and evenings to Nagoya and the airport; all ƒÊ-seats

An update: it was announced that Meitetsu will reduce services along the Inuyama Line from March 13:
https://www.meitetsu.co.jp/profile/news/2025/__icsFiles/afieldfile/202...

Basically, the 2 express trains per hour become semi-express trains, while the 2 semi-express trains will not go as far as Shin-Unuma anymore (only as far as Inuyama). So, it looks like you have only 6 trains per hours, 4 or which go beyond Inuyama towards Nagoya.
