Bus from Takayama to Shirakawago vice versa 2026/2/10 17:01
Can someone help me if there are multiple bus company that operates from Takayama to Shirakawago.
I tried making a seat reservation online via Japan Bus online https://japanbusonline.com/en/Detail/11900040002/0/4212032/4162027/ and unfortunately the seats were all sold out for february 23,2026. can you suggest where can I book online or can I just show directly at the bus station and buy tickets on the same day?

thanks in advance

This blog was originally written in Japanese, but it has been translated into English via Google Translate.

To sum up,

There are two morning buses that you can board without a reservation. You can (possibly) board by going to Takayama Bus Center and lining up. In fact, the author of this blog did so in January of last year.

You can (possibly) board the return bus in the same way. In fact, he did (to Kanazawa).

However, Shirakawa-go was packed with tourists.

This is just my speculation. In addition to express buses, there seemed to be many group tour buses entering the area. However, this year, the Chinese government has issued a warning against traveling to Japan due to its dangers, so the number of Chinese tourists may be decreasing. However, the number of tourists from other countries (especially Japanese) may be increasing.

I think Japan Bus Online is where you buy these tickets online. I would not count on just showing up the day of at Takayama Station and hoping there are bus seats available. Maybe it was possible a long time ago.

On 2/23, there are bus tickets available from Takayama to Shirakawago leaving at 13:10 and 13:20, etc.

But before booking, check if there are late-afternoon bus seats available from Shirakawago to your next destination, so you don't get stuck there.

Essentially there is one company - Nohi
https://www.nouhibus.co.jp/route_bus/takayama-shirakawago-line-en/
And they run buses with reservations and ones without. See
https://www.nouhibus.co.jp/route_bus/takayama-shirakawago-line-en/#tim...
If the reserved buses for your travel date are fully booked (reservations open a month in advance), you can try a non-reserved bus. However, there is no guarantee that you will get on, and that is also true of the return.
As a recommendation, go to Hida no Sato - lots of gassho houses, and you won't get stranded or over-run by hundreds of people off tour buses.

This is not what you mean, I think,
but the highway bus section Takayama -- Shirakawa-go
is jointly operated by five companies;
itfs a common section among bus routes connecting
Takayama City with Kanazawa City, Toyama City and Takaoka City.

unfortunately the seats were all sold out for february 23,2026.

Some buses to depart from Takayama in the afternoon
seem to have vacant seats
for Takayama -> Shirakawa-go.
However,
buses for you to get back to Takayama in the evening
has almost no seat left.
The system says
the bus to depart from Shirakawa-go at 15:45
(and arrive at 16:35 at Takayama)
has one seat still available,
but the other buses departing at 14:45 or later have none.

Alternatively,
you can take a highway bus from Nagoya to Shirakawa-go,
if your itinerary suits it.
For February the 23rd, there seem to be vacancy in some buses. https://www.highwaybus.com/gp/inbound/index
: From Tokai area - Aichi
: To Tokai area - Gifu

February the 23rd is a national holiday;
this year itfs a Monday.
During the extended weekend,
popular tourist sites may get crowded with people who live in Japan.
Itfs worth considering changing your dates, I suppose.

If February 23 is a holiday and expect more tourist on that day, do you think there will be chances to have more non reserve buses on that day? I can no longer adjust my itinerary as i have to leave Takayama the next day. i am just planning to go to Shirakawago as day trip only

According to the blog I mentioned in my previous post, when he went to the bus center at 8:15 to catch the 8:50 bus without a reservation, there were 20 people in line at that time, and 10 minutes later there were 10 more behind him (30 people in total), but at 8:25 a.m. a special bus arrived and he was able to get on.

Of course, I don't know if this is always the case, but if you line up at the bus center around 8, you should probably be able to get on the bus. On the way back,, if you line up in the morning you should be able to get on the bus to Takayama.

Why not go to the bus center at 8, and if you can't get on the bus, just give up?

problem solved. i just bought a round trip ticket for a Shirakawago and Ainokura Bus Tour via Nohi bus. I just needed a day tour at Shirakawa and go back to Takayama on same day and this is just fine.

You seem to be lucky.

According to the reservation system,
now there is only one seat left.

Also, due to infrequency of buses for Gokayama,
itfs not very easy to cover both Gokayama and Shirakawa-go in one day as a self-planned trip.

After the bus tour, please post your feedback.

I hope the weather will be fine for you to see gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
