Autumn in Kansai: Kurashiki or Omi Hachiman

Hello everyone,
Ifm planning a trip to Japan in late November and would appreciate advice on how to best arrange two flexible days around crowds, seasonality, and travel experience.
I have two available days:
Saturday, Nov 21
Monday, Nov 23
Ifm choosing between three destinations, with Kifune Shrine as a must-visit:
Kifune Shrine + Eizan Railway (Kyoto area) — must do – Mainly for the autumn atmosphere, foliage, and scenic railway.
Omi Hachiman – Interested in the canal area, historic merchant town, and relaxed walking experience.
Kurashiki – Interested in the Bikan Historical Quarter, canals, and traditional streets.
What Ifm trying to decide is the best pairing of destination and day:
Should Kifune be done on Saturday and Omi Hachiman or Kurashiki on Monday, or
Is it better to visit Kifune on Monday and use Saturday for Omi Hachiman or Kurashiki?
Ifd appreciate insights considering:
Crowd levels — especially how much weekends affect Kifune vs Omi Hachiman / Kurashiki
Seasonal timing — likelihood of autumn foliage or peak atmosphere around these dates
Ease of travel & pacing — transportation complexity, walking load, and how relaxed each day would feel
Given these factors, which day + destination combination would you recommend for the best overall experience?
Thank you very much for your time and advice.

The last time I was in Kurashiki (about a year ago) it was on a Monday and it was a bit dead, probably because of museum closures. Some other places (stores and restaurants in the shotengai) were also closed. So it was much less crowded than usual. It depends on what you want to do there whether it would be a good day. If you didnft plan to go to museums and just want to stroll the area, Monday might be your best day, to avoid crowds. Saturday in late November will be crowded in many places. Omi Hachiman isnft particularly known for koyo as far as I know, so maybe that might be the best use of your Saturday. I was there a week ago and it wasnft crowded at all, but itfs low season right now.
I expect the Eizan line will be very crowded on a Saturday if the maples are getting good by then, but others with more experience might have better advice.
Timing and intensity of fall foliage is a crap shoot in recent years. My advice would be to temper your expectations, and donft base them on the most spectacular photos youfve seen. Then if you do get some beautiful trees, you will appreciate them more.

Autumn leaf destinations in Kyoto will be packed on weekends, so do Kifune on the Monday.
Neither Kurashiki nor Omihachiman are major leaf spots. I would still expect crowds on the weekend but they are large so more people does not necessarily make them bad. Also, people cannot enter the canals, so you can see the nice cabal views in both cities no matter how many people are around. The trees along Kurashiki's canal are especially nice for blocking out the street crowds for good photos. In Omihachiman people can spoil the view (and pictures) by walking directly along the canal paths. Omihachiman has one major viewpoint while Kurashiki has 2 main streets and sidestreets where you can wander around. Even around the canal, there are multiple nice vantage points for pictures and taking in the beauty.
If you do Kurashiki, you could also visit Korakuen Garden which does have some autumn leaves if you still want to enjoy leaves that day.

23 Nov is a local holiday. So crowds would be the same as on a weekend. This O would purely decide on weather of the day in the region you want to go. I am assuming you are staying in one central location for all this. Eg Kyoto.

Ah, I forgot about that Nov. 23 holiday. In that case you should check museum web sites if youfre interested in going to museums that day (or interested in intentionally going on their day off). A lot of museums and other venues have Monday as their usual closed day but if Monday falls on a holiday they stay open that day and then close on Tuesday.

In case you are staying in Kyoto and planning just daytrips, then Omihachiman. Best if you rent a bike in station and enjoy. Kurashiki is actually good base town for 3-4 days.

I have been to both, Kurashiki back in 2016 and Omi Hachiman 2024, both are nice, Kurashiki has more shopping places for food, souvenirs etc, whereas Omi Hachiman has a less crowded vibe I think and you can ride the boats and go with cable car to see Lake Biwa from the top.
If you are already in Kyoto I would not go all the way to Okayama just for the sake of Kurashiki unless you are super interested, for me Omi Hachiman is beautiful enough as well so my point goes for Omi Hachiman considering the distance.

I visit Kurashiki a couple of times a year and weekends are busier and Nov 23rd is a public holiday making popular locations busy as there will be extra domestic travel. I will be staying in Kurashiki again next month (and on a Saturday night). I suspect Omi Hachiman will be less crowded simply because it is not as famous. A pairing of day and location, it might depend on your preference with whatever the weather is doing on the long weekend. As a side note, I did see a report that domestic tourism is still down on pre-pandemic levels at 560 million trips last year and many locations that I do go to are naturally crowded with domestic travellers. The 40-ish million international tourists while noticable, are a small fraction of overall travel.

Thanks everyone, this is super helpful.
Based on the feedback, Ifll go with Omihachiman as a Kyoto day trip and leave Kurashiki for a future trip when I can base myself there properly. The shorter distance and generally calmer vibe make more sense, especially over a long weekend.
Ifll also take the advice to do Kifune on Monday and keep Omihachiman for the weekend instead. Renting a bike around the canal area sounds perfect.
Really appreciate all the perspectives—thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.
