Norikura Kogen as day trips from Matsumoto?

We really wanted to do either Kamikochi or another similar town like Norikura Kogen (mid October) - but it seems that good accommodation is very limited. Shared bathrooms (toilet and showers) are quite common? Somehow, can't seem to adjust to the idea.
Our interests here are mainly the walks/hikes and nature more than the onsens.
My question is whether in your opinion, staying at Matsumoto and doing day trips here would be worth the effort. I think the area warrants more than just one day. How convenient is it? Is it just a bus that we get onto at specified times or does it involve prior booking? Are return journeys at the end of the day convenient?
I get the impression that Norikura Kogen seems to be quieter but as lovely as Kamikochi -am I right?
