Okinawa: a brief visit

I'm a long term Japan resident. Have travelled extensively.
Been down to the quieter little southern islands (Yaeyama isles, Miyako, Amami Oshima) many times, but don't really know the main island of Okinawa.
If I were to fly in for a very brief visit (maybe only two nights) where best should I head that's accesible from the airport by public transport, has a nice beach and a bit of nightlife? I usually try to stay a way from the most bustling areas, am just looking for somewhere charming.

I've only been to Okinawa once but it seemed more of an island where driving was a benefit if you were doing things outside of Naha. The island is quite large with attractions rather spread out which made public transport a pain due to time needed to visit multiple locations in a day.
