200K salary in Tokyo

Sandesh, I suppose it depends on the standard of living you are used to, but if you are planning on living in or close to Tokyo, then a salary of 200,000 will be *very* tight for two people. Anyway, I thought the minimum salary requirement for most types of working visa was 250K.

Are you coming to Japan on a full working visa such as a specialist or on a working holiday visa? Generally a working holiday visa allows you to work part-time for up to a 1 year limit or 6 months full time work (the other 6months beings travelling/no work). 200,000 pm will be very tight for 2 people but what else is included? If that includes an apartment and utilities then you will find it more comfortable to live on that salary.

Expenses in Tokyo

As it was said above, a salary of 200000 is quite tight for two people. Rent for a decent house in Tokyo Outskirts will be atleast 60000. Minimum utility charges comes to around 3000yen (gas), 3000 yen (power) and 3000 yen (water + hot water) if we use them with much discretion. transportation around Tokyo only for going to Office and returning will be minimum 5000 yen. So you see that most basic expenses itself is around 75000 yen *minimum*. So you will be able to just manage, but if you want to save money, then 200000 yen is too little in Tokyo.

300,000 is better. If the job you're getting is related to the degree you have then I'm not sure but I believe it should be a little higher but 300,000 is OK with extras you're getting because you don't get pay by what degree you carry if the work you're getting is unrelated to your profession.

I have no idea, you should ask your employer what the tax deal is. You should be OK with that amount after tax because you are single without dependence.

Hehe, I think 600,000 yen/month for a single person with no dependants in Yokohama and the company paying for your accomodation and commuting expenses is more than enough. How I wish I was in that situation...

I've just signed an x-pat contract here and managed to negotiate a salary AFTER tax. That due to that Japaniese tax laws are quite tricky to figure out. From what I've heard, the tax changes depending how long you are going to stay. First year you will have to pay about 10-13% tax. If your accomodation is provided to you by th ecompany, you will have to pay a benefit tax for that, but that one is included in the figure above (the answer is based on my own salary and the company is paying for my accomodation which is about 280.000Y/month). If you stay here more than one year, the tax will increase up to approx 20%. These rules apply if you start working here Janury 1st and end your employment December 31st. I've heard that there might be som difficulties when the employment starts and ends in the middle of year (like you might have to pay tax for two years or so), but I don't know for sure. Good luck
