JLPT Level 4 2007/1/11 13:07
Is anyone able to recommend a book that will prepare me for the JLPT 4 exam?

I have previously studied Japanese for seven years at school but that was a few years back now and I need to be refreshed. I have the Kanji flashcards and am after a book (not a website or software) that will work through grammar and vocab in a logical order.

Thanks,

Zoe

What you want is KANZEN MASTER series. Aimed just at passing the JLPT and geared towards it. Grammar etc all covered.

You might also consider getting:
Lets Learn Japanese Picture Dictionary. (its childish but has lots of vocabs useful and is picture based easier to remember)

There are some on-line resources you should have a look at:
From this page: http://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/Download.htm the following PDF is helpful for vocabulaire, kanji, grammar of past tests: http://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/DownloadF/4-all.pdf

Furthermore, if you register here: http://jlpt.info/ you can find past tests which are very valuable in the run up to 2 December.

Lil, I can't find that information myself, I'm starting my studies for JLPT level 3 now and I'm planning on buying this book: Unicom's 3 Kyuu Grammar for JLPT with 2 CDs as it seems to be a summary of all required grammar.

As for the Japanese for Busy People books, I have seen worse books and they helped me get my 95% score of level 4, so they must have taught me something :-) If you use the Japanese for Busy People books, make sure you do the exercises dutifully.

I recently bought Unicoms 3 Kyu Grammar but I bought it with the English supplement, as it is helpful when I don't understand what is being said in the textbook.
My teacher uses the Japanese for Busy People books which are good but does not cover each stage of the test without jumping from book to book.
What are you using to study the Kanji?

I have just downloaded Wakan and it looks promising to help me drill my vocabulary: http://wakan.manga.cz/?page=about&lang=en

As for kanji, vocabulary, etc, I used the following online resources:
+ http://jlpt.info/ (previous tests, etc)

Just to let you know that IMO Wakan turns out to be the most useful tool I have found until now while preparing for the JLPT level 3. http://wakan.manga.cz/
Make sure you install all the dictionaries you need to include in the program.

why bother with jlpt 4..?? It doesnt get you anywhere to take it, just costs money, and if you insist on taking a jlpt test in the near future why not go for level 3? Its not a big step up from 4.. But honestly, i wouldnt bother taking a jlpt test for below level 2

Official Book 2007/10/30 02:49
there's an official book for preparing, which contains all the specifications you will need to pass JLPT. It includes the vocabulary and grammar for all 4 grades.

It's named Japanese Language Profiency Test: Test content specifications.

My teacher gave it to me and I work with it a lot.

Why take the JLPT 4? 2008/7/20 15:07
Why take the JLPT 4? Because it is a good way to motivate beginners to see concrete improvement.

I'm taking it to motivate myself and to check my progress. I don't care what my certificate may or may not mean to others.
