I agree with Uji, try 'Hostelworld' which you can link here in Japan Guide in the 'Travel' header. You can also look or post an ad in JG's forum 'Accomodations' RE HostelWorld: I booked a room through JG's Hostelworld link before leaving for Japan in May and stayed at the 'Raizan'hotel at Imamiya Osaka. It is cheap [@Y2,500 night] the rooms are decent and the staff are very kind. Although I stayed only about 3 days it seems several of the guests were 'long-termers' so evidently it has something going for it. I hope you enjoy your stay! MP

Researched cheap hotels near JR

I am going to Osaka too and I am finding that this is one of the more expensive hotels to stay in Japan esp. if you want to be near the JR Rail.
The cheapest I could find is Hotel Sunroute Umeda at 8820 and that's 10 min. walk to JR Rail!

did you check www.japanhotel.net? I saw singles for as low as yen 5500. check al the Osaka areas on this site. you reserve directly with the hotel. all the hotels list the regular price and the special price, if any.

I would also recommend the 'Raizan' hotel. I paid 2000 Yen through hostel world I think, and it had everything you could want bar maybe location.
