Will be travelling this route next March.Is it worth taking the scenic route along the coast or going via Tokyo? {will have already spent time in Tokyo}

It takes considerably more time to travel along the coast compared to traveling via Tokyo.

Furthermore, some railway tracks along the coast were damaged by the recent earthquakes and the trains won't be running until at least August 10. You would have to take substitute buses or go via Echigo-Yuzawa (not fully covered by Japan Rail Pass).

I just read that you will be traveling next March. The tracks will be repaired until then, for sure!

The ride along the coast is quite nice, indeed, especially around Toyama, but I would not call it "must-see". I think it is a personal decision, whether you are willing to spend the additional time for some scenery.
