Using credit cards for transportation

I am trying to figure out how much cash I will need on my trip next week, and I know a lot of my expenditures will be for transporation. Are credit cards widely accepted for non-JR railways, subways, and the Narita Airport limousine? Thanks in advance.

For short distance travel even on JR trains, ie regular commuter trains, the ticket machines do not take credit cards.
