Apartment/House?

I've got the general idea of apartment price ranges and I plan to immigrate to japan but there's nothing about houses. Are the houses just really expensive for rent / buying? I want to move to a friendly community in the country with nice views. Will this be totally out of my league on a teachers salary?

Rental prices vary greatly depending on age, size and location of the apartment. Central Tokyo is most expensive:

Houses for rent are not so common, and buying is generally not an option unless you have permanent residence status, since that is a requirement for getting a mortgage. On a typical English teacher's salary, I don't think you will be able rent anything fancy anyway.
