I have a pen-pal, whos given name is Masanori. We've only just exchanged a couple emails.
They didnt say if they are male or female. I dont want to ask, I would feel rude. My first guess is that it is a female, but can someone confirm that?

If you ever come across this again and don't know the gender of the person, I usually do a google image search of the name and if most of the images are one gender... i can safely assume who the name belongs to.

yes, it is a male name.
It is not rude to ask your penpal's gender. He should have told you first but I think he assumed you can figure out by his name.
