Is this Japanese? And what does it mean? 2007/9/3 10:46

From left to right, I see:

"??" "正" "原" "東" then "錬" and "??" sideways.

東原正 I *guess* to be a person' name, and since 錬 is part of the word "alchemy" I imagine it must have something to do with metals maybe? But I have no idea why those two kanji to the right are placed sideways (while the large three in the middle are upright), and I cannot decipher the blurry imprint to the left.

I can't tell whether it is 練???
First two small kanjis are not clear to me but one of the two where above poster stated 練(second one) looks like 録 to me as in '記録', as in context of 'to record' as in きとめる, 書き留めたもの.
東原正 indicates that this suject comes from (or originated in) eastern field/plains.'
