Please check this page if you haven't.

My first impression would be that if you want to live in central Tokyo, 200,000 yen is a bit tough for a family of 4.

Sorry, I thought that you have 2 kids. Anyhow, I suggest you to find a place in the suburbs of Tokyo or neighboring prefectures. Otherwise, you would be broken.

you mean "broke", not "broken" ;-)

But I agree with you. 200,000 yen is barely enough for one person to survive on in Tokyo, let alone a couple with a baby.

If you are coming to work in IT Ramarao, please don't accept that salary. People in IT are usually paid more than twice that (450,000 plus) and you will not have enough money for the 3 of you to live on.

Even entry level English teachers get around 250,000 yen per month.

Ah, okay. That seems reasonable. I don't have any children so can't advise on exactly what your expenses might be. I would say you will be able to save a small amount of money a month though if you don't live in the more expensive areas of Tokyo.

I live in west Tokyo near a station on a JR train line- our small 2 room apartment costs 100,000 a month. If you live further from the station on one of the private lines rather than JR your rent could be less though.

I prefer not to give my contact details out on a forum like this but I wish you the best of luck should you decide to come to Tokyo.

Ok, so what you're really asking is if you can live on 280,000yen/month and save 200,000yen/month???

Let's assume you are spending 100,000yen/month on rent. How much cash will you have when you arrive in Japan? The money you may need to move into an apartment is:
100,000yen - one month rent in advance.
100,000yen - agent's commission (= one month rent).
200,000yen - deposit (= two month rent).
200,000yen - "Key money" (= two month rent).
70,000yen guarantor insurance
Total = 670,000yen

Refrigerator, washing machine, stove, clothes drier, TV, etc. 150,000yen + ?

So monthly costs:
Rent: 100,000yen
Electricity: 5000yen
Gas: 4000yen
Water/Sewerage: 3000yen
Phone: 5000yen
Food & supplies: 100,000yen
Transportation: 7000yen
Other?

Total = 224,000yen

Oh, and I didn't include furniture, beds, tables. chairs, etc, in the initial costs, which you would need to buy.

ramarao, I think Sandy's post answered to your question. Don't try to save too much from the beginning. As mentioned in Sandy's post, you have to buy many thing to start your life in Japan. But I personally think that 480,000 yen/month is not a bad salary at least for Japanese.
